Present: John Coogan, presiding, Mr. Loring, Dr. MeGlynn, Mr. Olson, Mrs. Morency Mrs. Vitale.
Due to a lack of quorum, no business was transacted.
Mr. Coogan introduced and welcomed the three new Trustees: Dr. MeGlynn, Mr. Olson and Mrs.
Morency and he explained that it had just been discovered that their appointments had not yet been
confirmed by the Board of Aldermen and therefore they could not yet vote. Aldermen's confirmation
will take place February 27.
Copies of the 1978/79 budget were handed out to those present. Mrs. Calish announced that she
would be available on Saturday, Feb. 25, for discussion of the budget with new Trustees.
Mr. Coogan stated that organization and committee appointments would probably be made at next
month's meeting.
Mrs. Calish discussed and explained the monthly financial statement. The State Aid grant (1978)
money ($14,018.25) has been transferred to the Library Maintenance account and the money is to
be allocated to books, periodicals, and special reference materials.
Mrs. Calish requested permission to ask Mayor for a transfer of $1500 from. Fuel account to Lighting
$1,000, to Telephone $500.
Carpeting for main stairway and upper foyer has been ordered from Mr. Magarian of Salem, at a cost
of $982. This will be paid for from Furniture account. The carpeting in the Reference Rom will be
repaired for $195.
Mrs. Calish announced that applications for Bookmobile operator's position has been narrowed down
to two applicants. She received 53 applications, interviewed 16, most of whom were well qualified.
A decision will be made within the next week. We will have to request money for books for the
Bookmobile as no money was allocated in the budget. Bookmobile is presently at the Public Works
garage. We will have to make arrangements to have repairs done and have it painted.
Union negotiations are still in progress, and Mr. Loring will continue working on these negotiations.
Librarian's report:
National Library week - April 2-8. Programs for that week:
Needlecraft exhibit in Beve~y Room, April 2-8.
Workshop on group leadership conducted by University of Massachusetts, April 5.
2 Hadassah will sponsor a program, April 3. Open house to demonstrate materials purchased
by $10,000 L.S.C.A. grant for Special Children, date to be announced.
April 17-22. Essex County Cooperating Libraries will sponsor an exhibit at the North Shore
Shopping mall in Peabody.
"Never-Too-Late!" program was snowed out. Hope to have Dr. Vincent, chiropractor, for
March 13 program.
Mr. Clifton Chandler, heating engineer, will contact Robert Shaw to have heating controls
fixed.
Library will be closed on Easter Sunday.
Farms Branch - group from Hastings House is using meeting room once a month.
Mrs. Calish is working with Jim Green, Recreation Director, on plans for using the library for
summer crafts programs.
Mr. Campbell, architect, and his assistant, Ms. Cathleen Wheeler, of Interact were introduced. Mr.
Campbell, who came at Mrs. Calish's invitation, stated that we would have to have complete set of
plans before we attempt to get funding for possible addition. Interact would do a feasibility study and
assist us in getting funds. There would be no charge for this. If we succeeded in getting the funds,
Interact would like to be considered and if selected, the charge would be included in their fee. Mr.
Campbell invited the Board of Trustees and Mayor Fortunato to visit Peabody Institute Library in
Peabody, where Interact is supervising the construction of an addition. Cathy Von Sonnenberg, the
League of Women Voters observer, was present.
