1969-10-16 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 10/16/1969 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad, Diane M. Isenberg, Robert W. Lovett, Mieth Maeser, Dr. Cornelius J. Murray, and Carolyn F. Standley Board members absent: Albert J. Rieci, and Barbara D. Risley Others present: Recorder: Florence A. Luther Thursday, October 16, 1969 4 P.M. The regular meeting was held at the Library on the above date. Present were Mrs. Conrad, presiding, Miss StandIcy, Mr. Maeser, Dr. Murray, Mrs. Isenberg and Mr. Lovett. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Administration: Work by Desmond & Larcom completed. Dr. Murray reported he had been to police concerning 30-minute parking in front of the Main Library, and that the City painters would paint iron work at both libraries. He will look into the matter of providing 30-minute parking space at Farms Branch. As of now, business people from West Street occupy the area all day. It was noted that the U.S. Treasury Bonds in the Lefavour Fund mature in 1969. The updating of the State Aid Bill passed the House but did not get through the Senate. It will be up for consideration again in 1970. Mr. Maeser will check custodian equipment at Beverly Farms. Report of the Budget Committee accepted. Voted Dr. Murray, seconded Mrs. Isenberg. Reports of Department Heads were read. All areas, with the exception of the Youth Room, gained considerably in circulation. The Youth Room had been closed during repairs. However, the reference done in the room since the reopening has been unusually heavy. Miss Carleton and Miss Scotti attended Mass. Library Assn. meeting at Wentworth. Communications: Mrs. Stevens requesting the position Mrs. Hall will be leaving at the end of the year. Miss Carleton requesting consideration of an advance in Yarger step since both Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Gibbs are retiring. Miss Kincade requesting staff status. Massachusetts Trustees' Association announcing meeting November 1. No action was taken concerning pending vacancies, Mrs. Conrad will go to Boston to various placement agencies. Several Trustees will attend Massachusetts Trustees' Association meeting. Mrs. White will have two weeks vacation but without pay since, due to illness and leave of absence, she has not worked thirty weeks prior to June 1969. Although opening the stacks to the public has increased the use of books, keeping books in order has been impossible, A page has been hired not only to help keep the stacks in order, but to have someone to guide the public once they get into the area. Toomey served faithfully for thirteen years as a Trustee of the Beverly Public Library; and WHEREAS Those who served with him remember gratefully his sound judgment and cheerful assistance wherever needed, especially as a member of the Committee on Administration and Finance; and WHEREAS We are saddened by his recent death, whereby the Library has lost a devoted friend and loyal supporter of its hoped-for expansion; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this tribute be recorded in the Minutes of this Board, and that a copy be sent to his family.
