Vitale Board members absent: Others present: Recorder: Esther Calish MINUTES Beverly Public Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting May 12, 1977 7:45 P.M. Present: Mr. Coogan, presiding; Mr. Ayer, Mrs. Fanning, Mr. Henderson, Mr. Loring, Miss Moran, Mr. Pohotsky, Mrs. Vitale Minutes were accepted as presented. Old Business: Mr. Coogan raised the question of the validity of the bill presented by company which Roto-Rooted clogged drain. Bill included heavy time charges for extricating equipment which was stuck in drains. Mr. Coogan suggested that we should not be held responsible for retrieval of equipment lost by the workmen. Motion made by Mr. Dyer and passed, that Finance Committee be asked to negotiate for a reduction of this charge. Librarian's Report: --The Friends of the Library have agreed to contribute $2,000.00 for periodicals shelving in the reading room. It was moved and passed to accept this git~. A letter from the Board and Mrs. Calish will be sent with thanks and acknowledgment. --A letter to the Board of Alderman was sent on behalf of the Trustees and the Librarian requesting permission to fill immediately the position of Young Adult (youth services) Librarian. Mrs. Calish was advised to contact John Kelleher to determine if this request would be considered at next Alderman's meeting. --The Library is starting a new program series called "Celebrity Workshop." Celebrities appearing or visiting in the Beverly area will be invited to the Library to discuss their specialties and experiences with the public. The first program will feature the jazz musician, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Tues., May 24, from 7 to 8 P.M. --Mrs. Calish was asked to obtain a progress report from Suzanne Nichelson, Farms Branch Librarian, on the historical work being done in the Beve~y Farms Room. Finances: It was moved to transfer $2,000.00 from the furniture fund to A-V equipment and library materials. Administration Committee: Mr. Loring reported that Mr. Goldberg had brought heating engineer, Mr. Channing, to the Library on May 12 to examine the defunct boiler. Another heating engineer, Mr. Everett Warren, who had worked on the Peabody Library heating unit, will also check out the situation. He will be at Mr. Goldberg's office on May 20, at 2 P.M. Any trustee wishing to join this inspection tour may join the group at that time. The usual engineer's fee is 10% of the equipment cost. Mr. Goldberg recommends that the engineer selected be responsible for selection of the proper equipment, make certain that all specifications are met and that the equipment is installed properly. New Business: The Library budget will be considered at The Board of Alderman's meeting on Wed., June 1. The Trustees Finance Committee will convene May 31, at 7:45 to review budget in preparation for this meeting. Miss Moran presented a listing of Beverly Public Library trust funds (attached) and recommended that we obtain a legal ruling on the intent of the Katherine P. Loring Memorial Fund, created for use in building a children's library. Since no such building is contemplated, those funds should be used for Children's Room furnishings and equipment.
