MINUTES
Beverly Public Library
Board of Trustees Regular Meeting
Thursday, January 20, 1977 7:30 p.m.
Present: Mr. Coogan, presiding; Mr. Lofing, Mr. Pohotsky, Mrs. Vitale.
Minutes of the December 16, 1976, meeting were approved.
Organization of the Board of Trustees was postponed by Mr. Coogan.
Committee Reports:
*Committee on Administration: No report
*Committee on Finance: Mayor James A. Vitale has granted our request to transfer the sun
of $1,650 from the fuel account to the lighting and telephone accounts.
*Committee on Personnel: Report on the progress in the search for a new head librarian. Mrs.
Scully has been named acting head director.
Librarian's Report:
(Highlights of departmental reports)
*Circulation: The Bureau of Library Extension has requested we keep a tally of
non-resident use of our library. Last year several libraries received grants of
$3,000-$7,000 because of high nonresident use.
*Reference: A new CETA employee, Paulette Massari, was hired to respond to
questions from city officials and the public.
*Children's Room: Mrs. Hutchins and Mrs. Congdon hosted a workshop for the
North Shore Educators of Young Children.
*Farms Branch: A Christmas party for preschoolers, and two film presentations %,ere
among the programs held this month at the branch.
Old Business: None
New Business:
Mr. Coogan notified board members of the final presentation on January 27, 1977, by the
students from the Boston Architectural Center. The class will propose renovations of the
library to met future demands.
VOTED: To accept a grant of $100 from Massachusetts Council on Art and
Humanities to preserve a rare atlas of Essex County.
VOTED: To submit the attached, letter to all city department heads.

As the result of the efforts of former Library Director, Mark A. Nesse, Paulette Massari has
been hired through the CETA Program to the position of Research Aide in municipal reference. The
library would like to take a more active role in providing all aspects of municipal information for both
the public and the city. Therefore, the purpose of the new position is to provide city officials and
businessmen with a direct liaisson to the library when they seek information on various topics relating
to municipal management.
Ms. Massari is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and has work experience in the
following capacities: Program Associate of the Criminal Justice staff, Unitarian Universalist Service
Committee; Research Assistant to the Children's Defense Fund, Inc. , A. Washington Research
Project; Volunteer Emotional Counselor to the Cambridge based Women's Center; Board of
Directors, Northridge Homes, Inc. She is also a Notary Public and is affiliated with the American
Judicature Society, Massachusetts Council for Public Justice, New England Psychological Association
and Alpha Kappa Delta, a national sociological honor society.
Later this month all department heads will be provided with forms which they can send
directly to Ms. Massari in the library. Answers will be forthcoming as soon as possible. Further
questions about the newly-created position are welcome, Please contact Bob Dugan or Paulette
Massari in the Reference Department of the library.
