1975-01-16 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 01/16/1975 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Lester C. Ayers, Richard J. Bronstein, Mieth Maeser, Carolyn F. Standley, Samuel E. Tappan, and Beatrice R. Vitale Board members absent: Louisa V. Conrad, Diane M Isenberg, and Michael Larivee Others present: Recorder: Mark A. Nesse Beverly Public Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting January 16, 1975 Present: Miss StandIcy, presiding; Mr. Ayers, Mr. Bronstein, Mr. Maeser, Mr. Tappan and Mrs. Vitale. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved with changes. Committee Reports Finance Committee - current financial statements were studied. VOTED: To authorize the committee to take whatever steps are necessary in order to proceed with the installation of the lavatories. Since bids, as submitted, were too high, all carpentry work will be eliminated from. the specifications (which will later be done by the City of Beverly carpenters in order to bring the cost to within reason. Circulation Committee - circulation charts were studied. Nothing unusual for this time of year. Circulation is about the same as last year. Farms - No report. Bookmobile - Mayor Vitale included a new bookmobile among his priorities for the coming year in his State of the City speech of 1/6/75. Specifications are to be developed in cooperation with the Public Works Department. Delivery will be 6 - 10 months from the date of order. Librarian is to check into the current status of the Mayor's request with Board of Aldermen. Personnel Committee - VOTED: Replacement for Mrs. Olive White at Farms Branch by Ms. Suzanne Nichelson of Gloucester on the six-month provisional basis. Maternity leave policy was referred back to the committee for further development. Librarian's Report Librarian briefly noted the highlights of various departmental reports. Old Business VOTED: To move one air conditioner from reference and youth rooms each to yellow room and work room. Letter sent to Mayor's Charter Revision Committee was read. New Business: Mr. Esty has been volunteering one year this month. Life would be difficult without him. Mrs. Arlene LeBlanc is now volunteering her time and talents to the library... sending out bills for overdue books. A series of three programs on food and nutrition, conducted by the Agricultural Extension Service of the Essex Agricultural and Technical Institute will start on 1/17/75. Preliminary plans have been made to cosponsor with NSCC a course in Beverly's history to be taught by Mr. Roger Hanners and Mr. Arthur Preston. Recommendation that we drop out of the Mass. Film Co-op next year was considered. The librarian was to further examine the ramifications of such a move with the appropriate persons in the school department. A going away party for Olive White was left to the staff... with trustees participating as they were able. Mr. Ayers was to approach Beverly Times Publisher on the donation of a microfilm reader/printer with the understanding that the Times could use it at no charge. Librarian noted that proposals for LSCA (Library Services & Construction Act) funds were requested by the Mass Bureau of Library Extention before 2/7/75, and that after consultation with department heads, a proposal (s) -would be submitted with the ultimate approval of the Board of Trustees. VOTED: The librarian should explore the possibilities of library sponsorship of a series of "Meet your local Officials" ... patterned after the ~EANUTS'" Lucy and her "5¢ psychiatric help" booth. Local citizens could meet/question/corner local officials such as the mayor, aldermen, state representatives, school committee, etals. VOTED: To reimburse the librarian for a course taken through Suffolk University ... "Personnel Management in the Public Sector". Adjourned 5:45 P.M. Mark A. Nesse Clerk
