Thursday, December 16, 1971 4 P.M.
The regular meeting was held at the Library on the Above date. Present were Mrs. Conrad,
presiding, Mr. Kicci, Mr. Maeser, Mrs. Risley, Mr. Lovett, Mr. Cole, Mrs. Isenberg and Dr. Murray.
Minutes of the last meeting read and approved.
Financial sheet studied.
Reports of Department Heads read.
Administration:
Some repairs have been needed on Farms boiler. (Boiler may need extensive repairs in the
near future).
City Public Works and Federal-funded painters have started work. Clerk instructed to write
Mayor expressing appreciation and the hope that men be allowed to stay until all jobs are
done. Copy to Mr. Mitchell of Public Works.
Communications:
Request from Mrs. Bernice Gilman that she be allowed to take part of her vacation in
February. Kequest granted.
Estimate of Burglar Alarm from Hovey & Hovey, Distributors. Cost $385.45 plus Telegard
to police $495.00. After January 1, Dialarm to police costs $195.00 plus $3.00 monthly
charge. It was decided to accept Mr. Hovey's offer of 1 month's trial.
From Mrs. Cook - a thank-you note and holiday greetings.
New Business:
Vandalism of the stacks, outside lights, and recent attempts to break in the back door were
considered very serious. Clerk instructed to inform the Mayor that because of this an
additional man should be in building during hours of late afternoon and evening. Custodians
just unable to be on all floors and on five levels of stacks. Michael Keenan is to be
approached. If he is unavailable, someone from Gordon College. Letter to Mayor explaining
this situation.
Mrs. Isenberg questioned the legality of the $10.00 deposit for out of town students now that
the residency law gives them voting privileges. The City Solicitor is to be requested to give
a clarification. (Mr. Cole approved). (The consensus of opinion was for clarification although
the majority felt refundable service deposit should be retained).
Mr. Cole and Mr. Ricci to compose letter to Mayor stressing the urgency of an expansion
program.
Mrs. Conrad explained that a letter had gone down from the Building Commission in
November 1971 to the Mayor and the Finance & Property Committee.
Considerable discussion was given to Volunteer services. Thought being that a small group
of volunteers might lead to a Friends of the Library Group.
Library is to close the day before Christmas and New Year at noon.
