December 15, 1966 4 P .M.. Regular Meeting
The Trustees' Meeting was held at the Library on the above date. In attendance were Mrs. Conrad,
presiding, Miss StandIcy, Mr. Tooracy and Mr. LoveR.
At 4 o'clock Members of the Youth Council of the Baptist Church under the direction of Mr. Sumner
Grant, Student Assistant Minister, made a surprise appearance. With Mr. Grant were Dana Phipps,
Wendy Thomas, Karen Luoma, and Brenda Walker. These students were representing 40 Members.
Mr. Grant explained that they all (40) had a grievance:
1. Library shotrid be open 9-9 every day and Sat. afternoon until 5.
2. Library should have open stacks.
3. Community College and others be charged $3 registration fee to take out books.
Mr. Grant explained that 7 Members had made a study in Swampscott, Salem and Peabody,
henceforth Beverly should do likewise.
The Trustees and Librarian explained in detail: 9-9 closing was under consideration. Open stacks:
impossible with the existing set-up, books would be out of place, lost and stolen. Would need two
pages on each floor to supervise. Money not available. $3 registration: there has been a non-resident
fee for a long time. Cannot compare this library with others. They left, apparently with a better
understanding.
Because of the lateness of the regular meeting Mrs. Conrad omitted the minutes and other reports.
Mr. Toomey reported new toilets at Farms Branch and would get wet battery for emergency lights
in Reference Room. It was explained that the leak in the Y.P.R. Room is still bothering, Mr. Toomey
will cornact Belanger Co.
Discussion of the Eastern Regional Public Library System was held over until next meeting. The
question is as to the participation in this program. Further study is to be made.
The Yarger Study and salary increases were discussed. There is to be a meeting at City Hall Dec. 19th
to vote on this project. Mr. Toomey and Mrs. Conrad will attend.
Because of overlapping of term papers, books are not returned in time for the next group to use. It
was thought wise to ask Mr. Watts, Head of the English Dept. to attend a short meeting to discuss
this issue.
