1966-01-20 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 01/20/1966 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad, Anne P. Bryant, Frank P. Hyde, Mieth Maeser, Dr. Cornelius J. Murray, Carolyn F. StandIcy, and Thomas J. Toomey Board members absent: Robert W. Lovett, and Frederick H. Pierce Others present: Recorder: Marion A. Brown Thursday January 20, 1966 4 P.M. The regular meeting of the Trustees was held at the Library on the above date. In attendance were Mrs. Conrad, presiding, Mrs. Bryant, Miss Standley, Mr. Maeser, Mr. Hyde, Mr. Toomey and Dr. Murray. Mr. Robert W. Lovett, newly appointed, in place of Mr. Doherty, was unable to be present. The records of the previous meeting were approved as were the Finance sheets giving the balances for the year. The Librarian's report and reports of Dept. Heads were read and placed on file. Mr. Tooracy reported that he and Mrs. Conrad had consulted with the Mayor as to the 1966 Budget. In some places he agreed to increase: Books $1050; Binding $200; Lighting $100; Repairs $200; Jan. Supplies $100; a total of $1650 increase, akso agreed to allow $8500 for pages. For administration, Mr. Toomey reported that asphalt tile was requested by the Custodians for the lower floor corridors. However, the feeling was that the walls in both Reading Rooms should have priority as they are in very crackled condition. As this was not allowed in the Budget, a discussion was held as to putting canvas or some such on the walls. Also requested by custodian was some increased lighting at top of marble stairs going to upper floor. Mrs. Conrad suggested one or two fiuorescent lights on a small shelf at top of stairs. This to be taken care of by City Electrician. Mr. Toomey also reported that wet batteries for auxiliary lighting are to be installed soon. VOTED every five years to purchase the Boston Directory, also to buy a new Colliers Ency. for Reference Roont VOTED use of hall at Farms to Farms Improvement Soc. Feb. 24 in the evening. West Beach Annual Meeting, Feb. 2 l-evening. Farms-Prides Community, Feb. 4-evening. VOTED Custodian must be paid $2.50 per hour when they do this extra work for organizations. VOTED to take Christina Carleton on the Staff for 6 months probation to start at once at $64.30 per week. She is to assist at Main Desk and bookmobile. She is a graduate of B.H.S. and has had one year at Salem State College. Letters were read liom Mr. Doherty thanking all for their assistance while a Trustee and ~rom Mrs. Cook expressing thanks for her new position as Young Adults' Librarian. Adjourned 5:15 Marion A.
