1963-06-20 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 06/20/1963 Place: Beverly Public L~rary Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad, Russell P. Brown, Anne P. Bryant, Edward M. Doherty, Frank P. Hyde, Carolyn F. StandIcy, and Thomas J. Toomey Board members absent: Frederick H. Pierce Others present: Recorder: Marion A. Brown THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 1963 4 P. M. The regular meeting of the Trustees was held at the L~rary on the above date. Those in attendance were Mrs. Conrad, presiding, Mrs. Bryant, Miss StandIcy, Mr. Hyde, Mr. Doherty, Mr. Toomey and Mr. Brown. Because of the death of Mr. Lancaster, today, Mrs. Conrad asked for a moment of silence. She also asked Miss Standley and Mrs. Bryant to set up some resolutions for Mr. Lancaster, to be sent to Mrs. Lancaster and for the record. It was VOTED to close Sat. morning from 9 - 12 so Trustees and Staff could attend the services. The records ofthe last meeting were approved as read and after study ofthe finance sheets they were accepted. For Administration, Mrs. Conrad stated that the doors as well as the frame work should be replaced at the Farms. Mr. Tooracy said that the Mayor stated that they could be done by the City men. Regardless they definitely need attention very soon. Mr. Tooracy also stated that the City men could do the Farms ceiling for $500. He will try to straighten out with the Insurance Co. involved. VOTED Mrs. Dunklee attend the fourth year of Public Library techniques at the University of N.H., July 29 to Aug. 16, to be given the amotmt of the fee of $75, receive her weekly pay and to be given a weeks vacation with pay. The circulation reports and report ofthe Librarian were read and approved. Mrs. Conrad read a letter of resignation from Mr. Dunklee, Special Services Librarian because of a bad back trouble. Accepted with regret. Discussion of a new bookmobile took place. Mrs. Conrad read a letter from Beverly Rotary Club presenting the Trustees of the Library $2000 to be held in Trust until such time that enough money was available This amount is in the Beverly National Bank. Mr. Phillips, Pres. of the Bank as Treasurer of Rotary would attend to. Mrs. Conrad presented her Committees and appointed her Committee to make up a new set of by-laws. Doherty June 21,1963 Dear Mrs. Lancaster, Each and every member of the Board of Trustees of the Beverly Public Library extends his deepest sympathy to you in the death of Mr. Lancaster. His lose to us an a valued friend and member of the Board touches deeply. We remember particularly his interest in and support of the Bookmobile; his wonde~tlly helpful graphs that sparked renewed interest in all phases of library service. There was never a Board meeting when his real understanding combined with quiet humor didn't affect us all. His tremendous knowledge of history shared so generously, make us proud to have been associated with him. It is with deep appreciation for all he has meant to the Lih'ary that we send our sympathy to you, Mrs. Lancaster, in these very difficult days. s/Mrs. John Bryant Secretary of the Board WHEREAS it is with a tree sense of loss and a real sense of sorrow at the passing of BRUCE LANCASTER, a fellow Trustee of the Beverly Public Library; and WHEREAS we note the many comributions he made to the progress and development ofthe Library giving credit to everyone other than himse~ and WHEREAS his excellent advice and wholehearted cooperation with Board and Staff have been an inspiration to all concerned; and WHEREAS he was ever a modest, unassuming man blest with a quiet wit and a refreshing approach to any problem at hand, with an obvious interest in every aspect of our association with him on the Board of the Library; and WHEREAS his remarkable ability as a writer has brought honor to the Library which he served so unselfishly; and WHEREAS Bruce Lancaster served with dignity and wisdom the Library to which he was devoted; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this humble tribute acknowledging the heritage he has left with us be entered in the RECORDS OF THE BEVERLY PUBLIC LIBRARY'S BOARD OF TRUSTEES for all to see.
