The hearing was called to order at 7:30 p.m.
Chairman Carbone informed the audience of the purpose of the heating and the ground rules for
testimony. Individuals were asked to sign an attendance sheet and to indicate if they wanted to
speak. The audience was informed that the Board would accept written comment until the close
of business on June 11, 1999. Comments should be directed to the office of the Board of Health
located at 90 Colon Street, Beve~y, MA 0191 5~

The following is a summary of a majority of the comments made:
The bars will lose business and subsequently be forced to close.
Concerns about a level playing field and competition from Salem establishments.
Wait for statewide regulation.
Representative Cahill will introduce statewide legislation.
Let the businessman set business practices and market forces drive the issue.
Smokers rights.
Non-smokers rights.
Possible legal action against the Board
