1857-05-13 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 05/13/1857 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Charles Haddock, Joseph G. Dodge, Benjamin O. Peirce, and Joseph D. Tuck Board members absent: Richard P. Waters Others present: James B. Hill, Librarian Recorder: Benjamin O. Peirce Wednesday Evening May 13th 1857 In default of the attendance of the members at the appointed time a special meeting was held this evening at the Library Room. Present Messrs. Dodge, Leach & Peirce with the Librarian, Mr. Haddock was prevented from attending at the early part of the evening. The Librarian made a statement of the amount of labor which he found it necessary to perform & the inadequacy of the compensation allowed him. After some discussion it was Resolved That the sum of Two hundred dollars be appropriated as salary to the Librarian for the currein year and that this is to be considered a full compensation for all services required of the Librarian by the By-laws. It should have been stated that in the absence of the President of the Board at the early part of the meeting Joseph G. Dodge was chosen Chairman. The Librarian having stated that the convenience for writing the delivery of books were not such as was desirable. It was Resolved. That Mr. Tuck with the Librarian be authorized to make such arrangements as they should deem suitable for the purposes of the Librarian in general accordance with their views verbally presented at this meeting. Resolved That Mr. Peirce in connection with the Librarian be requested to present to the Board their views with Respect to a rearrangement of the books of the Library & the prospective preparation of a new catalogue. Mr. Dodge reported that he had procured new subscription to the Library Fund to the amount of Forty five dollars. Adjourned to the first Wednesday evening in June.
