"The Board of Trustees of the Public Library having been informed by Mr. Endicott of the death of Mr. Charles Giddings who since the organization of this institution had gratuitously performed with promptness and exactness the responsible duties of Librarian to the entire satisfaction of the Board. It was unanimously Resolved That in the sudden decease of Mr. Charles Giddings, the library has lost one of its most active and valued friends whose place it will be difficult to supply. Resolved That we offer to his surviving relatives and friends our hearty sympathy & bear cheerful testimony to the noble disinterestedness and gentlemanly bearing of the man and to the purity of his life. Resolved That a copy of the foregoing resolutions signed by the Chairman & attested by the Secretary be presented to the family of the deceased. Mr. Endicott reported that Mr. Charles Davis had accepted his appointment as Librarian. Mr. Haddock from the committee on examination of the books received from the Proprietors of the Social Library presented a catalogue of about six hundred volumes with a report attached representing the books as being in very poor condition comprising very many incomplete or imperfect works and altogether of but little value, the circulation according to his judgement not being likely to exceed ten per cent of the number on catalogue. This report on motion of Mr. Galloupe accepted & placed on file. It was then resolved That Mr. Haddock be authorized to dispose of the odd & defective volumes of books belonging to the Social Library in such way as he may see proper. Voted to adjourn to Wednesday evening.
