1855-11-17 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 11/17/1855 Place: Town Clerk's Office Board members present: Richard P. Waters, William Endicott, Jr., Charles W. Galloupe, Charles Haddock, and Benjamin O. Peirce Board members absent: Others present: Charles S. Giddings, Librarian Recorder: Benjamin O. Peirce Saturday Evening Nov. 17th 1855 The Board assembled at the Town Clerk's room pursuant to the adjournment of the 12th. All the members of the Board were present, as also Mr. Giddings the Librarian. The subject of "Rules & Regulations" which had lain over from the meeting of the preceding Monday was by unanimous vote postponed still farther to give room for the consideration of matters connected with the selection of books. On motion of Mr. Galloupe it was Voted That a committee be appointed to prepare & report a list of books to form the basis of our library & that in the prosecution of this, to procure the aid of the Librarian of the Boston Mercantile Library Association & others in whose judgment & knowledge of books they may have confidence to whatever extent they may think proper. The Chainnan appointed on this committee Messrs. Peirce, Galloupe & Endicott. On motion of Mr. Galloupe Voted That the President & Secretary announce to the Town authorities the fact that more than five hundred dollars had been collected by subscription for the purpose of establishing a Free Public Library & that they call upon them for the sum appropriated by the Town for the same purpose at their meeting of April 2d. The Board then proceed to determine the times of service for the respective members. It was effected by drawing lots & resulted as follows: Richard P. Waters' term expires 1856 William P. Endicott Jr.'s term expires 1857 Charles Haddock's term expires 1858 Benjamin of Peirce's term expires 1859 Charles W. Galloupe's term expires 1860 The Board then adjourned to meet in the same place at 7 o'clock Saturday evening.
