1957-10-17 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 10/17/1957 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad, Saul J. Cagan, Dorothy Cook, Frederick Pierce, and Thomas J. Tooracy Board members absent: W. Lincoln Boyden, Jr., Russell P. Brown, and Carolyn Standley Others present: Recorder: Marion A. Brown Thursday October 17, 1957 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library at 7:30 on the above date. Mrs. Conrad presided. Present were Mr. Cagan, Mr. Toomey and Mr. Peirce. The records of the previous meeting were read and approved. The finance sheets were studied and accepted. At the request of Mrs. Conrad, Mr. Toomey and Mr. Brown were asked to draw up resolutions for Mr. John C. Birmingham who passed away Oct. 6, 1957 having served on the board since 1941. The report of the Circulation Committee was approved as read and placed on file as was the Librarian's report. A letter was read from Mr Leroy C. Mureh, Attorney at Law stating that the Second Article of the Will of Miss A. Florence Monroe, reads as follows. To the Beverly Public Library, all of my books. Voted: to gram the Beverly Municipal Credit Union the use of Library Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 7 to 9 P.M. Voted: to grant the Beverly Color-Photo Club the use of Library for their monthly meeting for 1957-1958 Season. Mr. Pierce reported for his Committee on the Library Trust Funds which is herein on file and continues from time to time a further study. As most of the City Trust Funds are for the Library use Mr. Cagan was asked to prepare a communication to the Mayor requesting that one member of the Board of Trustees be appointed to the Commission of Trust Funds. Mr. Tooracy, Chairman of the Building Commission presented his Report of the activities of his Commission to date. A discussion was held concerning what type of oil burner should be considered for Farms Branch. Voted to adjourn Adjourned 9:20 Marion A. Lefavour $81,687.84 Only the income can be spent Sohier 10,922.94 The income can be used for prizes to pupils now in Beverly public schools, or to recent graduates, for instruction in the use of the Library. Ebenezer Ray Not restricted 20,496.29 The .fired is to be used by the trustees in such manner and for such purpose as they deem just. Abby W. Hunt 12,359.50 The income is to be used by the city for the purchase of books. John I. Baker 12,000.00 The "preference" of the donor was that the fund be used for the purchase of books on History, Politics, and Political Science. Sarah Whitmarsh 6,801.20 The trustees are not limitext in the expenditure of this .fu~d.. L.D. Webbet 1,000.00 The interest is to be spent annually for the purchase of new books. Katharine P. Loring 2,000.00+ Add interest accumulated 1955 680.58 This fund is to be used toward the cost of the erection of a building as a childmn's library. Total Funds $147,948.35 Total from which interest is received 145,267.77 1957 dividend from these funds Percentage of income return 2.64.
