Thursday September 20, 1956
The regular meeting of the Board was held on Thursday, September 20, at 7:30 P.M. with
Mrs. Conrad, Chairman, presiding. All Trustees were present except Mr. Brown who was absent
because of illness. Mr. Thomas J. Tooracy attended his first meeting of the Board and was welcomed
by all present.
The records of the meeting of June 21 were read and approved as was the report of the
Finance Committee giving details of expenditures and balances to date. Because of the great increase
in reference work both in the Children's Room and Y.P.R. and because of the necessary summer
project of weeding the book collection it is absolutely necessary to obtain more page money.
Therefore it was voted to transfer $500 from Maintenance (Dog tax) to Salaries to be used for pages.
Also pages start at more, 50-75, 90.
Mrs. Conrad explained for the Administration Committee that the Paul E. Dutelle & Co. had
made an examination of the roof at the Main Library and recommended practically a new roof at an
estimated cost of $10,000. It was decide to explore all conditions of the roof and set an inspection
day so as some specific amount could be put in the 1957 Budget. Ralph Sloane of Nashua, N.H. was
one firm mentioned.
Mrs. Conrad explained the proposals for New Lighting have been requested and specifications
were on file for installing high power fluorescent lights in the stack.
She also explained that the Beverly Farms Improvement Society had put in a concrete walk
at the Farms Branch.
As the Farms Fire Station is nearing completion it was voted to erect 93 t~. 6 R. high of link
fence to match existing fence to continue in the rear of Neighbors Hall at a sum not over $300.00.
It was voted to dose Saturday morning Oct. 13 so Staff could enjoy a long weekend.
The Circulation Committee recommended the purchase of 170 books which was approved
as was the Librarian's report giving details of circulation and activities during the summer.
One important summer project was the weeding and discarding of approximately 1000
outdated books that no loner justify their space on the shelves because of infrequent circulation and
not recommended.
Mrs. Conrad explained that Russo & Milliken recommended that the interior of all traps
should be replaced to operate correctly and they gave as estimate of $610. It was voted to spend this
year not more than $250 to replace the very necessary traps and another year complete the job.
As the flagpole was rusting at the base it was suggested to contact the last man or else the
City Maintenance Men to take care of this matter.
