1955-09-01 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 09/01/1955 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad, Russell P. Brown, Saul J. Cagan, Dorothy Cook, Carolyn Standley, and Carl Zeilon Board members absent: John C. Birmingham, W. Lincoln Boyden, Jr., and Frederick Pierce Others present: Recorder: Marion A. Brown September 1, 1955 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library Thursday evening Sept. 1 at 7:30. Due to the resignation of Mr. Philip Rowe, July 6, Mrs. Conrad, Sec. presided. Present were Mrs. Cook, Miss StandIcy, Mr. Cagan, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Zeilon. Mr. Frederick Pierce was the Mayor's choice for the vacancy on the Board. He was unable to attend this meeting. The records of the last meeting were approved as read and the financial report was studied and accepted although the amounts have been expended for many items. Discussion took place as to the bad leaks in Hall and Art Room also the bad cracks in both Reading Rooms. It was stated that the window trim would be painted very soon. Mr. Brown explained that he would consult the Mayor about pointing up the brick on the front and Dane St. side of the building. The Committee on Circulation recommended the purchase of 150 books 30 juveniles replacements and 16 gifts. The report of the Librarian was read and placed on file. It was voted to accept the resignation of Mrs. Louise Cutler with regret and as of Sept. 1. It was left for a letter of appreciation of her work be sent to her. In her place it was voted to take Mrs. Horence Luther on the Staff as Cataloger at the same salary of $2674. She is to work full time during the winter and 1/3 time during the summer (and fill in her absence with part time assistant possibly Miss Ruth Parker.) It was left for matter of assistant in the Y.P.R. to lay over until the next meeting. It was voted to place the magazine list on a two years basis with either Faxon of Boston or North Shore News Co. whichever would give us the most discount, and pay part this year & part next. It was voted to decline with regret the request of the Beverly Farms Gift Scout Council for the use of the Farms Hall for permanent headquarters as they wanted the use of it 3 afternoons every week. It was agreed the for special occasions they would allow them to use it. A long discussion took place as to the Farms American Legion using the hall at Bev. Farms Library for permanent headquarters. No written request came from the Legion but Mr. Brown explained that he had had a short note from Mr. Wigglesworth. It was voted 5 to 1 although Mr. Brown was in... against it against letting them use it for their headquarters. Although it was felt that for Special Installations permission would be granted. It was voted to decline and send a letter stating their reasons. It was voted to express appreciation and thanks to Mr. Clark for maintaining the buildings alone for 6 weeks while we were trying to obtain another janitor. Voted to send a letter of regret to Mr. Philip Rowe on his resignation from the Board. Nominations were declared for Chairman of the Board. Mrs. Conrad was unanimously elected Chairman and Mrs. Cook Secretary. A discussion then took place as to the Centennial Celebration Sept. 18. Mrs. Conrad explained the program and asked the different Trustees to meet the prominent speakers. Voted to adjoum Adjourned Marion A. Brown Clerk.
