1955-04-21 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 04/21/1955 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad, John C. Birmingham, W. Lincoln Boyden, Jr., Saul J. Cagan, Carolyn Standley, and Carl Zeilon Board members absent: Russell P. Brown, Dorothy Cook, and Philip Rowe Others present: Recorder: Marion A. Brown Beverly April 21, 1955 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library Thursday evening, April 21 at 7:30 P .M. As the Chairman Mr. Rowe was not present, Mrs. Conrad, Secretary presided. Those present were Miss StandIcy, Mr. Boyden, Mr. Cagan, Mr. Zeilon and Mr. Birmingham. The records of the meeting of March 17 were read and approved, as was the report of the Finance Committee giving a summary of expenditures and balances to date. It was brought to the attention of the Administration Committee that the flag pole needed to be repaired and painted. An estimate of $50 was given by George Freeman, Steeplejack of Salem. It was voted to have this work done by Mr. Freeman unless there was an objection from the City Maintenance Men. (Mr. Brown, since this meeting did contact the Mayor and he said to go along as voted.) The matter of a gas water heater was then discussed.. The North Shore Gas Co. recommended a Rudd Monel Water heater. The cost of the heater and installation would be $167. The Board felt this estimate was too high and was left to more discussion later. A letter was read from Louise Cutler requesting a leave of absence until Sept. 1, on the advice of her physician. It was voted to grant her this necessary leave without pay. A letter was read by the Secretary from Miss Anitra Kline requesting an increase in salary of $7 per week or $3250 per year. This request was presented because of the many duties she has to perform as first assistant. The general feeling was that an increase should be considered for all the members of the Staff; not on a basis of one. It was voted for Mr. Brown to handle this situation and contact the Mayor. It was voted that the Farms Branch should remain open Wednesday evenings until June 1 and start again in the fall. The Circulation Committee reported that 202 new titles had been added. This report was approved. The Librarian's report was then presented giving a summary of activities, circulation and registration figures during the month. This report was placed on file. Mrs. Conrad explained that Mr. Walter Whitehall would be willing to speak at the anniversary ceremony Sept. 18. She also reported that Mr. Whitehall stated that it would be a waste of money to have any history of the Library printed as it would be expensive. He did suggest that a small pamphlet be printed with Library information available to the public such as a chart of costs, figures or some such material. After discussion it was decided to have Mrs. Marion Rudkin give a Book Review on May 10 at 8 o'clock. Voted to adjourn Adjourned Marion A. Brown Clerk
