Beverly, January, 1953
The regular meeting of the Board was held at the Library on Thursday evening, January 29,
at 7:30 P .M., with Mr. Rowe acting as temporary chairman, and Mrs. Cook and Messrs. Birmingham,
Boyden, Cagan, and Zeilon in attendance.
The records of the meeting of December 29 were read and approved, as was the summary of
appropriations, expenditures for the entire year of 1952.
Mr. Rowe reported, for the Administration Committee, that Mr. Greenlaw had submitted an
estimate of $2,211.78 for changes in lighting at the Main Library, and that the Curtis Lumber
Company had submitted an estimate ors 160.00 for new doors at the Main Library, while the estimate
ofJ.A. Gourdeau, Inc., was $192.00 for the same doors in pine and $249 in oak.
Mr. Boyden volunteered to see if lower prices could not be obtained from other firms and to
bring these figures to the February meeting of the Board.
Voted: that the Municipal Employees be allowed the use of the Library Hall for meetings; and
that Mrs. Palmer's request for the payment of all the insurance coverage on her car ($79.88 + $8),
with which she earties books to shut-ins, be approved - this to be paid from Trust Funds.
It was voted to grant at least two weeks sick leave with pay to Arthur Pariseau, a janitor on
provisional appointment at the Main Library, who had taken and passed the examination for a
permanent appointment but became ill before passing the physical tests
The Trustees accepted with deep appreciation the gift of one hundred dollars to be used for
the purchase of books on Art, Architecture, Ceramics, Old houses, etc. for the Farms Branch, and
Mrs. Conrad was asked to express to Mrs. Evelyn L. Roberts their sincere thanks for her gift.
After informal discussion as to the best way of taking care of the vacancy caused by Mrs.
Brown' s transfer to the position of Head Librarian, it was voted that nothing definite be done until
the Board of Trustees organize for the coming year, though Mrs. Luther should be asked to continue
with the eataloging as she has been doing for the past two months.
And since the money for Pages is being spent too rapidly - out of proportion to what will
probably be granted for the entire year - its was voted that the matter of Mrs. Folsom's future
employment be left to the discretion of Mrs. Brown.
The Trustees expressed their appreciation of Miss Stanton's forty-seven years of service to
the Library and to the City - first as Library Assistant and then as Head Librarian - and wished her
good luck in the years following her retirement on January 31.
The annual report of the Trustees which had been prepared by Miss Stanton, in the absence
of Mrs. Conrad, was mended by the Trustees to include further emphasis on the need for changes
in heating and lighting which had remained unchanged since the library was opened in 1913 - the
report then to be sent to the City Governmere as the formal report of the Board.
Voted: that a Committee of Three, including Mr. Rowe, make an appointment with the Mayor
to talk over the Budget for 1953.
Voted: that the North Shore Library Club be invited to hold its March Meeting at this Library,
and that any expense incurred be paid for from Trust Funds.
