The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library on Thursday, September
25, at 7:30 P.M., with Mr. Delaney, Mrs. Conrad, Mrs. Cook, and Messrs. Birmingham, Cagan,
Rowe, and Zeilon in attendance.
The Secretary' s records of the last meeting were read and approved, as was the report of the
Finance Committee giving expenditures to date.
Mr. Delaney reported, for the Administration Committee, that since the last meeting both
boilers at the Main Library had been vacuum cleaned, that a price of approximately $557 had been
given by the Public Works Department to cover cost of labor for painting the Lecture Hail at the
Main Library, one coat, and the stairway, two coats. This work would be begun at once.
He also reported that the back doors at the Main Library had not yet been repaired, since
further examination as to the possibility ofrepaiting the ones now in use must be made.
At the Farms Branch, cleaning and slight repairs will be needed to put the oil bumer into
satisfactory working order. This will be attended to at once.
Mr. Delaney also reported that Mr. Rourke, the provisional janitor at the Main Library, had
proved very unsatisfactory during the summer months, and had been discharged and replaced by
Arthur Pariseau, who will take the Civil Service examination for the position when the date is set.
The Committee on Circulation reported that since September 278 books had been purchased
and 6 books received as gifts. This was approved.
This Committee also presented for consideration the proposed magazine list for 1953. It was
voted to subscribe to the same list as those taken in 1952, with the substitution of Reporter for
Survey and the addition of the Ellcry Queen Mystery Magazine for the Hospital and that the list be
placed again with Miss June Picketing of Beverly.
After some discussion it was voted not to accept the gift of a piano for the Farms Branch
since it would be used mainly by the Farms Improvement Society for programs for Boy Scout and
Girl Scout activities.
It was voted to approve Mrs. Olive White' s request for six months leave of absence without
pay - her place, during this absence to be filled by Mrs. Thomas Leahy, assisted by Mr. Thomas Jack.
Looking forward to Miss Startton' s retirement in January 1953, it was voted unanimously that
Mrs. Marion Brown, now Assistant Librarian, is herewith appointed to fill the position of Librarian
on Miss Stanton's retirement on January 31, 1953, Miss Stanton to take the momh of January as
vacation with pay, in lieu of unused vacation periods through the past.
After discussion as to how best to obtain larger appropriations from the City Government,
it as voted that the Trustees consider vital needs, collect all possible figures for improvemems and
repairs, and hold a special meeting around the middle of October for the purpose of discussing how
best to get the required funds for such changes and for salary increase from the incoming City
Government.
