1952-06-26 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 06/26/1952 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Thomas F. Delaney, John C. Birmingham, W. Lincoln Boyden, Jr., Saul J. Cagan, Dorothy Cook, Philip Rowe, and Carl Zeilon Board members absent: Louisa V. Conrad, and Lawrence E. Foster Others present: Recorder: Marjorie H. Stanton Beverly, June 26, 1952 The June meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at 7:30 P.M., on Thursday, the twenty- six, with seven members present: Mr. Delaney, Chairman, Mrs. Cook, and Messrs. Birmingham, Boyden, Cagan, Rowe, and Zeilon. The records of the meeting of May 29 were read and approved, as was the report of the Finance Committee giving details of expenditures to date. Mr. Delaney, for the Administration Committee, reported that the ceiling over the staircase at the Main Library was beginning to fall and was in need of immediate repairs. After thorough discussion of the need for repairs and improvements at the Main Library and for the completion of the work begun in 1949 under the supervision of the Commission appointed for that purpose, it was voted to send three letters to the Mayor and the Board of Aldermen: one, asking that when such action is taken by another Department as was the case in which several months ago a drainage ditch was dug on the Library grounds at Beverly Farms, and a new gasoline tank installed, for the benefit of the Farms Engine House, the Trustees be notified in advance and any damage to Library property be repaired by the other Department. A second letter, requesting that a Special Appropriation of approximately 3,500 be granted to the Commission on Repair to the Farms Library, in order that the job there may be finished and a report made to the Trustees and to the City Government; and a third letter asking for an appropriation sufficient to cover the cost of making necessary repairs to the outside of the Main Library building, including pointing up the brick work, painting the iron work, etc. A copy of the two latter letters is to be sent to the Beverly Times and Salem News. The Committee on Circulation recommended the purchase of 246 titles and the receipt of 8 gifts. This was approved. The report of the Librarian, giving details of circulation and activities during the month - especially of the Contest recently held in the Children's Department - was presented and placed on file. In response to her suggestion that it might be possible to start a '~record collection" for circulation at moderate outlay of money, the Trustees decided that it would be wiser, in view of the present need for repairs to the building, to wait until a later date before beginning this new service. This Board then moved to organize; and, by ballot Mr. Delaney was again elected Chairman, Mrs. Conrad, Secretary, and Miss Stanton, Clerk. It was voted to omit the July and August meeting of the Board, unless called for special purpose by the Chairman, Adjourned Marjofie H. Stanton Clerk
