1952-05-29 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 05/29/1952 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Thomas F. Delaney, Saul J. Cagan, Louisa V. Conrad, Philip Rowe, and Carl Zeilon Board members absent: John C. Birmingham, W. Lincoln Boyden, Jr., Dorothy Cook, Lawrence E. Foster Others present: Recorder: Marjorie H. Stanton Beverly, May 29, 1952 The May meeting of the Board was held on the 29m, at 7:30 P.M. with Mr. Delaney, Mrs. Conrad, and Messrs. Cagan, Rowe, and Zeilon in attendance. The records of the April 24th meeting were read and approved, as was the report of the Finance Committee giving expenditures and balances to date. Mr. Delaney had no report to make for the Administration Committee, but did suggest that the Trustees consider what was most urgently needed in the way of repairs at the Main Library - such as painting, changes in heating and lighting, possible enlarging of the Reference Room through the installing a new and more compact Circulation Desk, etc. - so that request for a Supplementary Budget for this purpose, with figures, might be sent at once to the City Government. This suggestion was approved. The matter of the organization of the Board was left until the next meeting, in the hope that more members might be present. At Miss Stanton's request, it was voted that two members of the Staff be allowed to attend the American Library Association in New York City, June 28 - July 5, - Miss Stanton, also, if she cared to go - their expenses to be paid from Trust Funds. Miss Stanton discussed with the Board the question as to whether or not the circulation of books at the Beverly Hospital should be confined to patients only, as was the original understanding on the part of both the Hospital Directors and the Library Trustees, or whether the privilege be extend to nurses and Hospital Staff in general, and it was voted that the privilege of drawing books from the Library Deposit be restricted to patients only. Mr. Rowe, as a Director of the Hospital, was asked to talk the matter over with Miss Bartley. The Circulation Committee recommended the purchase of 417 titles and the acceptance of 5 gifts. This recommendation was approved. The report of the Librarian, giving details of circulation and registration, and of the Reading Contest being held in the Children's Department was presented and placed on file. The meeting was then adjourned. Marjorie H. Stanton Clerk
