Birmingham, Thomas J. Casey, Lawrence E. Foster, William A. Rowe, and Robert O. Small Board members absent: W. Lincoln Boyden, Jr., Louisa L. Vaughan and B. Frederick Yoffa Others present: Recorder: Marjofie H. Stanton Beverly, May 31, 1945 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library on Thursday, May 31, at 7:30 P.M. There were present, of the Trustees, Messrs. Delaney, Birmingham, Casey, Foster, Rowe and Small. The Secretary' s records of the meeting of April 26 were read and approved, and it was voted to ratify all action taken at that meeting at which there had not been a quorum present. The report of the Finance Committee, giving a summary of expenditures and balances for the first five months of the year was read and placed on file. Mr. Delaney, for the Administration Committee, gave further explanation of the question which had arisen as to whether the small park on the Hale Street side of the Farms Branch should be under the jurisdiction of the Library Trustees or of the Public Works Department of the City. After careful consideration of the deeds by which the property was acquired, it was decided that it came under the jurisdiction of the Library Trustees and that they should continue to supervise it as they had done since the Farms BranCh was completed. It was voted to ask Mr. Richardson, Commissioner of Public Works, about removing a broken branch on one of the trees at the Farms Branch. It was voted to file with the Post-War Planning Committee of the City a statement that the Trustees have it in mind to build a Children's Library on the land on Winter Street, already owned by the Library, and that though no definite plan has been decided upon at this time, the Trustees wish to place the matter before the Planning Committee for consideration when such projects are being taken up by the Committee. The Committee on Circulation recommended the purchase of 334 titles and the acceptance of 7 gifts. This recommendation was approved. The report of the Librarian, giving the summary of activities - especially of the school year actMties in the Children's Department - was read and placed on file. Mr. Delaney was authorized to get bids, if possible, for new marble steps at the Main Library, - his report to be presented at the next meeting of the Board. The resignation of Miss Isabelle Preston who had been an assistant at the Library for the past schedule, in accordance with the vote taken at the May meeting of the Board.
