1896-27-01 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 01/27/1896 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Joseph D. Tuck, Joseph S. Baker, Charles L. Dodge, William K Driver, Edward L. Giddings, and Elizabeth P. Sohier, Board members absent: Allen H. Bennett, Katharine P. Loring, and George E. Woodberry Others present: Recorder: Charles L. Dodge Beverly January 27th 1896 The Board of Trustees having been appointed by the Mayor Dec. 28, 1895 under the provisions of Chapter 304, Acts of 1895 and in accordance with an ordinance passed Nov. 16, 1895 by the Board of Aldermen. Beverly having been granted a charter to become a City in 1894 holding its first election in Dec. of same year. No change was made in the Board of Trustees until the adoption of the ordinance previously mentioned (in accordance with section 32 of the City Charter, Acts of 1894) at which time a communication from the Mayor and Board of Aldermen was received announcing the increase in the number constituting the Board of Trustees from six to nine to consist of the following persons: For one year: Elizabeth P. Sohier Katharine P. Loring Allen H. Bennett For two years: William R. Driver George E. Woodberry John S. Baker For three years: Edward L. Giddings Joseph D. Tuck Charles L. Dodge The Board of Trustees met on Monday, January 27th, 1896 in the Aldermen' s room for organization. Mr. loseph D. Tuck in the chair. The meeting was called to order and proceeded to organize. Present Messrs. Tuck, Giddings, Dodge, Driver, Miss E. P. Sohier and John S. Baker. On motion of Mr. Giddings, it was Voted That we proceed to ballot for President and Joseph D. tuck was unanimously elected. On motion of Mr. Giddings, it was Voted That we proceed to ballot for Secretary and Charles L. Dodge was unanimously elected. On motion of Mr. Driver, it was Voted That we proceed to ballot for Librarian and assistant and Miss Martha P. Smith and Jennie P. Dodge were unanimously elected. On motion of Mr. Dodge, it was Voted That we proceed to ballot for librarian at the Beverly Farms Branch and Miss Sylvia Bennett was elected. On motion of Mr. Giddings, it was Voted That further action on completion of the organization be postponed pending a revision of the Rules and Regulations and that committee of 4 be appointed by the chair whose duties shall be to examine, amend and make alterations as they may deem expedient and report at a subsequent meeting hereafter to be named. On motion of Mr. Driver, it was Voted That the President and Secretary be authorized to make a requisition for the annual appropriation as recommended in the report of the Trustees of Two thousand dollars and one half the receipts from dog licences. On motion of Mr. Giddings, it was Voted That the secretary be a committee to investigate the matter of transportation of books to and from the branches and maintenance of the same. On motion of Mr. Giddings, it was Voted That Messrs. Tuck and Baker be a temporary committee on rooms. On motion of Mr. Driver, it was Voted The President be authorized temporarily to examine and audit all bills on account of the Library before forwarding to the Auditor. On motion of Mr. Giddings, it was Voted That when we adjourn it be to meet on Saturday Feb. 8m inst. at 4 o'clock P.M. And the meeting was so adjourned Charles L. Dodge Secretary
