1958-10-02City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 10/23/1958 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad, Saul J. Cagan, Dorothy Cook, Bruce Lancaster, Frederick Pierce, Carolyn Standley, and Thomas J. Toomey Board members absent: Russell P. Brown, and Thomas J. Casey Others present: Recorder: Marion A. Brown Beverly, Oct. 23, 1958 The regular meeting of the Trustees was held on the above date at 7:30 P.M. with Mrs. Conrad, Mrs. Cook, Miss Standley, Mr. Toomey, Mr. Pierce, Mr. Lancaster and Mr. Cagan in attendance. Mrs. Conrad presided. The records of Sept. 18 were read and approved and the report of the Finance Committee was read and accepted. For the Administration Committee Mr. Toomey read the final report of the Commission on Emergency Repairs to the Beverly Public Library as well as a report of all expenditures. Mrs. Conrad commended Mr. Toomey for such an excellent report and a vote of thanks was extended to the Commission. Mr. Toomey extended thanks to Miss Kline for her excellent reports she did for them. Voted: Friendly Garden Club use of hall the afternoon of Jan. 27, 1959. The report of the Circulation was approved as read as was the Librarian' s report giving the activities of the month. A long discussion was held as to the extended illness of Mr. James Clark. All felt that he is not able to return to work and as of Nov. 14 his sick leave ends and there after he would not be paid. The solution is a question and Mr. Toomey will further the investigation to the finish. Upon request of the Asst. Librarian to clarify the vacation policy it was voted until such time it is amended, the following: 3 weeks vacation after first year of employment June 1 - Labor Day taken in turn 1 week or equivalent 35 hrs Nov. 1 - Apr. 15 with least possible publicity. Christmas shopping day one 8 hr. day or equivalent not to be taken on nights one works Dec. 1-25. Time out other than personal sickness must be made up or pay forfeited. Mrs. Conrad produced the deed to the Winter St. land that was purchased from Trust Funds for a Children's Building. After discussion a motion was made and so voted that a letter be sent to the Chamber of Commerce as they are trying to obtain it for a parking lot. All were in favor except Mr. Toomey abstained and Mr. Brown was not present. The letter is as follows: Mr. Oscar Olsen, Chamber of Commerce "The property in question was purchased with Trust Funds belonging to the Trustees of the Beverly Public Library for the sole purpose of constructing a Children' s Library Building. Since the Trustees are charged with the duty of keeping the land for such purpose the Trustees feel that they do not have the right to divert the use of such land to any other purpose." The above was unanimously voted at this meeting. Voted to adjourned at 10:10 Marion A. Brown, Clerk. Mr. Casey resigned
