The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at 7:30 P.M. on the above date with
Mrs. Conrad presiding, Mrs. Cook, Miss Standley, Mr. Cagan, Mr. Toomey, Mr. Pierce, Mr.
Lancaster in attendance.
The records of April 17 were approved as read. The report of the Finance Committee giving
details of expenditures was read and placed on file.
For Administration Mrs. Conrad explained that Henderson & Herndon stated that it is not too
late to cut hedge and they would start next week.
Mr. Toomey read the expenditures and balances of the Building Fund and explained that the
Fire escape bid was awarded to Arthur Blaser of Salem and the contracts would be signed soon. He
expressed thanks to Mr. Freyman for the excellent work done in the corridors. To be completed are
Stack ceiling whitened by City Men (nothing has been done to this for 40 years). Outside lights to be
put back soon. The hot water lines are pitted and cold water feed that are bad are to be inspected by
Murphy the Plumber and attended to if possible. Also consider a card cabinet as well as improved
charging desk. This was discussed. Mr. Toomey brought up the additional bill of $344 sent in by Mr.
Boyden which was questioned but all felt it should be paid.
Thanks was expressed for the whole Board by Mrs. Conrad to the Building Commissioners
for the wonderful job well done.
Mr. Toomey explained that the question of using the Winter St. lot for parking was again
brought to his attention. After a long discussion it was voted that the Children' s Building comes first
and this matter be placed on the table.
Mrs. Conrad suggested a small reception be held for Miss Crafts who retires after 30 years
be held Thurs. evening June 19 at 8:15 with Staff and close friends of Miss Crafts. A Committee was
appointed to take care of this: Mrs. Brown, Chairman, Mrs. Cook, Miss Standley and Mrs. Conrad.
Mr. Pierce to attend to collecting from the Trustees for the present and refreshments.
Mrs. Conrad read a letter from Mrs. Cynthia Symonds applying for Miss Crafts position. It
was voted that no action be taken until after June 30 when the position becomes vacant.
Also read was an application from Miss Carol Lee Dahlborg of Brockton Public Library for
any vacant position. It was decided to acknowledge her letter and request references from Miss
Rachel W. Cartland, Librarian of Brockton.
Mrs. Conrad explained that she and Mr. Cagan are still making a study of salary adjustments
and evaluations and a preliminary salary scale was presented. The study will soon be completed so
that the Finance Committee of City Hall as well as the Mayor can be approached before July 1.
Voted: to close Sat. May 31 and Sat. July 5 for Staff to have long weekend.
