1958-04-17City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 04/17/1958 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad, Saul J. Cagan, Bruce Lancaster, Frederick Pierce, and Thomas J. Toomey Board members absent: Russell P. Brown, Thomas J. Casey, Dorothy Cook, and Carolyn Standley Others present: Recorder: Marion A. Brown Thursday April 17,1 958 The meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library on the above date at 7:30. Present were Mrs. Conrad, Mr. Toomey, Mr. Cagan, Mr. Lancaster and Mr. Pierce. After the records of the previous meeting were approved as read it was moved to proceed to the organization of the Board. By ballot Mrs. Conrad was unanimously elected Chairman and Mrs. Cook was elected Secretary. The Chairman will appoint her Committees late. Mrs. Conrad than appointed the Committee for the Fund Raising for a new Children's Building: - Mr. Cagan, Ch. of Finances, Miss Standley, Mr. Brown and Mr. Pierce. Also a committee to make a study of buildings: Mrs. Cook Ch., Mr. Lancaster, Mr. Casey and Mr. Toomey; than have a report for the Sept. or Oct. meeting. Mrs. Conrad than explained that she and Mr. Cagan decided that it was unwise to send a letter to the press as to the Saturday afternoon and evenings staying open until 9. The Finance Sheets were studied and accepted as was the report of the Librarian. For the Administration Mrs. Conrad reported that the Janitors Room could be made over into a study and Reference Room and the new pamphlet files to be used there. Mr. Toomey reported in detail as to the activities of the Building Commission and explained that bids for repairing the fire escape will be out shortly. Suggestions were made and voted to remove all the unused old lockers and would be done by the City Maintenance. After trial closing of the Library for Noah Shore Meetings it was voted to change the rule to remained open except when Meetings are held in Beverly or Beverly Farms. After discussion of the hedge at the Main Library it was voted to go along with Henderson & Herndon's recommendation of removing the hedge to the ground at a cost of $345. The bill to be separated into $200 to do the work and $125 for carting it away. The motion was again made to authorize the Librarian to attend the A.L.A. Conference in San Francisco, as of the previous vote. Normal traveling expenses to be considered. Mrs. Conrad explained that she had drawn a plan for an improved charging desk. After study and discussion Mrs. Conrad was authorized to proceed further. It was decided that a small reception for Miss Marion Crafts, who retires June 30 after 30 years service, be held Thurs.
