1958-03-20City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 03/20/1958 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad,, Saul J. Cagan, Thomas J. Casey, Dorothy Cook, and Thomas J. Toomey Board members absent: Russell P. Brown, Bruce Lancaster, Frederick Pierce, and Carolyn Standley Others present: Recorder: Marion A. Brown Thursday, March 20, 1958 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at 7:30. Mrs. Conrad presided. Present were Mrs. Cook, Mr. Cagan and Mr. Toomey. The records of the previous meeting were accepted as read Voted: The organization for the current year be referred to the next meeting as only 4 were present. The Finance sheets were accepted but as yet the Budget for 1958 had not been returned from City Hall. For the Administration Committee Mrs. Conrad reported that the shades at the Farms Hall as well as the Main Library Hall were in very bad condition. Also the flag pole at the Farms was very bad and rotted at the top and Mr. Dolloff reported that it should be attended to. Also the panic bar at the Farms Hall was working very hard. Mr. Toomey stated that he would attend to all of these items. For the Building Commission Mr. Toomey reported that he and Mr. Boyden were very dissatisfied with the brick work at the fight of the front door and that he would have it corrected. The expenditures & balance were read and placed on file. He stated that the rubber tile in back of main desk and reference room would be done to match up with the existing tile in the Reading Rooms and also the YPR would also be attended to with asphalt tile. This was approved by all present. It was also decided to have the City Maintenance Men paint the Art Room to match up with the Hall. There was discussion of a new or improved charging desk and Mr. Toomey stated that if it was possible the desk would be considered. A discussion was held as to raising funds for a new Children' s Building. Mr. Cagan explain that there is $22,000 now available from Trust Funds. It was voted that Mrs. Conrad appoint a Committee to look into the matter and start proceedings toward raising funds for a Children's Building on Winter St. land. Voted building fund for Children' s Building Voted to close the Library from 12 - 6 o'clock Good Friday April 4. Voted to send the Librarian to the A.L.A. Meeting ( in July 13-19 San Francisco) Voted to send a letter to Beverly Times and Salem News to correct the inaccuracy in their papers adding that the budget will not permit extra heat, light and janitor service and Staff is way underpaid. Mr. Cagan and Mrs. Conrad to attend to. These was a discussion of salary adjustments. Adjourned at 9 o'clock Marion A. Brown, Clerk
