1949-10-27City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 10/27/1949 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Thomas F. Delaney, and W. Lincoln Boyden, Jr., Board members absent: John C. Birmingham, Thomas J. Casey, Louisa V. Conrad, Lawrence E. Foster, William A. Rowe, Robert O. Small, and B. Frederick Yoffa Others present: Recorder: Marjorie H. Stanton October 27, 1949 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held on Thursday, October 27, at 7:30 P.M., with Mr. Delaney and Mr. Boyden in attendance. Since this was not a quorum, all action taken was subject to the approval of the Board at its next meeting. The records of the meeting of September 29 were read and approved, as well as the report of the Finance Committee, giving details of expenditures to date. At the request of Alderman Chase, the Trustees re-considered the matter of charging the Cinecrafters five dollars for the use of the Library hall for each of their meetings - because these meetings are always open to the Public without charge - and it was voted to allow the hall to be used for this purpose, free of charge, provided the matter of janitor is taken care of. The question of allowing the League of Women Voters to use the hall, without charge, for its meetings was taken under advisement, the matter to be decided at the next meeting of the Board. A request was received from Mrs. Thomas Toomey that the Gift Scouts be allowed to use the hall at the Farms Library for meetings, but it was the opinion of the Trustees that this would be most unwise, while repairs were still being made, and Miss Stanton was asked to write Mrs. Toomey of this decision. The Committee on Circulation recommended the purchase of 93 titles and the acceptance of 10 gifts. Voted: that this recommendation be approved. The Committee also presented for approval the suggested list of magazines and of newspapers for 1950; and it was voted to adopt the same list as that subscribed to for this year, again placing the magazine list with Miss June Pickering and the newspaper list with the Merrill Stationery Store of Beverly. Voted: to pay thirty dollars from Trust Funds to cover charges for a course in Reference Books being taken by one of the Assistants and to allow Mrs. Day of the Farms Library, leave of absence of from six to eight weeks, without pay, so that she may visit her father who is ill in Florida. Voted: that the next meeting of the Board be held on November seventeenth, to avoid conflict with Thanksgiving Day, and that Mr. Small call a meeting of the Finance Committee previous to that date to prepare the budget for the coming year.
