Beverly, December 27, 1951
The regular meeting of the Board was held on Thursday, December 27, at 7:30 P.M. with Mr.
Delaney, Mrs. Conrad, and Messrs. Boyden, Cagan, Rowe and Zeilon present.
The records of the meeting of November 23 were read and approved, as was the report of the
Finance Committee giving a general summary of expenses for the year.
Mr. Delaney reported, for the Administration Committee, that the Mayor had agreed to
provide the $406.00 necessary to pay for repairs to the skylights at the Main Library, and that another
leak which was discovered later would have to be paid for from the regular Library appropriation.
He also said that the lock on the front door at the Farms Branch was being repaired, in the hope that
this would remedy the trouble there.
The report of the Circulation Committee recommending the purchase of 175 titles was read
and approved.
The Librarian' s report with a brief account of the activities of the year was presented and
placed on file.
After informal discussion as to the possibility of starting a collection of records for circulation
among borrowers, as is being done in many libraries, it was voted the that Trustees establish what
might be called a five point program toward which to be working, namely:-
1. Increases in salaries for members of the Staff, to equal those paid in other libraries of the
same size.
2. Increase in appropriations for the purchase of books and periodicals, since this is the
purpose for which a library exists.
3. Repairs to the buildings, such as painting, fixing leaks in roof, etc.
4. Improvements to buildings: - conversion to oil heaters at Main Library, new lighting
systems new furniture for reading rooms, expansion of reference books.
5. Extension of service to public: - such as establishment of record collection, etc.
Voted: to adjourn
