Delaney, Louisa V. Conrad, William A. Rowe, and Robert O. Small Board members absent: John C. Birmingham, W. Lincoln Boyden, Jr., Thomas J. Casey, Lawrence E. Foster, and B. Stanton Beverly, November 18, 1948 The regular meeting of the Board was held on Thursday, November 18, at 7:30 P.M., the date having been changed because of the conflict with Thanksgiving Day. Mr. Delaney, Mrs. Conrad, and Messrs Rowe and Small were present. The records of the meeting of October 28 were read and approved. Mr. Small, as Chairman of the Finance Committee, presented for consideration, the proposed budget for 1949 as prepared by the Finance Committee at its meeting on November 15. After careful consideration of salaries paid assistants in various position in the Library, and salaries paid librarians in cities and towns of comparable size, it was voted to increase the maximum established by the Trustees in 1947 to read as follows: Librarian $3,500.00 Assistant Librarian 2,500.00 Children' s Librarian 2, 140.00 Branch Librarian 2,040.00 Desk Head 2,140.00 Reference head 2,040.00 Desk Assistants 1,840.00 Children' s" 1,840.00 Clerical" 1,640.00 Increases for the Librarian and Assistant as well as for Pages at the Main Library and the Farms Branch were then voted making a salary budget of $32,718.00 to be asked for for 1949. Because of the increased cost of all items in the maintenance of the Library, a Maintenance budget of $13,950 was voted to be necessary for the needs in 1949. It was further voted that Mr. Small make a comparison of the appropriations of 1935 and 1948, showing the cost of books, binding, fuel, repairs, etc. during those years, thus compiling explanations of the reasons for the increase requested. He was also requested to list Library activities which had had to be discontinued during recent years because of lack of funds. After discussion of the great need for repairs at the Farms Branch Library, it was voted to ask again for a special appropriation of $22,000.00 to be used for that purpose. Mr. Delaney reported, for the Administration Committee, that the oil burner at the Farms Branch had needed repair during the past month and that the front door there was must be repaired and some changes made in electrical wiring. This would be attended to at once. The report of the Circulation Committee, recommending the purchase of 33 new titles was presented and approved.
