Birmingham, Thomas J. Casey, Louisa V. Conrad, and Lawrence E. Foster Board members absent: W. Lincoln Boyden, Jr., William A. Rowe, Robert O. Small, and B. Frederick Yoffa Others present: Recorder: Marjorie H. Stanton September 25, 1947 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at 7:30 P.M. on Thursday, September 25, with Mr. Delaney, Mrs. Conrad, and Messrs. Birmingham, Casey & Foster in attendance. The records of the previous meeting - that of June 26 - were read and approved, and all action taken at that meeting was ratified by the Board. The report of the Finance Committee, giving details of expenditures and balances for the eight months of the year was read and approved. Mr. Delaney reported, for the Administration Committee, that only ordinary repairs had had to be taken care of during the summer, but that some repairs to the plastering at the Main Library should be taken care of at once. He also reported that the experiment of closing the Library at noon on Saturdays had been tried for two months - with no apparent hardship to the public. The Trustees voted to continue this for another month. It was voted, also, to continue closing the Library at 8 o'clock in the evening because of heat and lighting. A letter was received from the Camera Club, asking permission to use the Library hall for meetings. The Trustees voted not to accede to this request, on the ground that it would mean additional expense in heating and lighting, and the Secretary was instructed to write this decision to the club. A letter was received from Mrs. Alice Tappan Pratt, now employed at the Newton Library, applying for a position at the Beverly library. Miss Stanton was asked to find out more about Mrs. Pratt's qualifications and present salary and report to the next meeting of the Board. The Circulation Committee reported that 762 new titles had been added to the Library since the June meeting, including 104 gifts. This report was approved. The report of the Librarian, giving the details of work accomplished during the summer months was read and placed on file. This included the reregistration of borrowers, 2721 having taken out cards at the Main Library alone, since July 5th, the taking of inventory of 5 classes of books; the elimination of many old magazines - this being done upon advice from the State Library Commission - and the re-arrangement of all the bound magazines in the Library. The Circulation Committee presented, for the consideration of the Board, the proposed magazine list for 1948, and its was voted to place the order again with Miss June Pickering of Beverly, whose services had been entirely satisfactory in the past. Voted: to adjourn Adjourned Marjorie H. Stanton Secretary
