Beverly, March 27, 1947
The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library on Thursday, March
27, with Mr. Delaney, and Messrs. Birmingham, Boyden, and Foster and Rowe being present.
The records of the meeting of February 27 were read and approved, as was the statement
of the Finance Committee giving expenditures and balances to date. Since the budget had just
been passed by the City Government, it was possible to give definite figures at this time. And it
was possible for Mr. Delaney to compare for the Trustees, item by item, the figures asked for by
the Trustees with those granted by the City Government - a comparison which showed, in almost
every item, a much lower figure than what the Trustees had considered necessary for the proper
running of the Library.
The Committee on Circulation recommended the Purchase of 209 titles and the receipt of
349 gifts. This was approved.
Mr. Delaney reported that since nothing had been done this year by the City Government
about the appropriation for repairs to the Farms Branch, it might be well for the Trustees to take
further steps in the matter.
After discussion of the question, it was voted that Mr. Boyden see Mr. Cann about the
possible cost of sufficient repairs to the building to make leaks and to repair damage to ceilings
and side walls and to report on this at the next meeting of the Board. - with the understanding that
the Committee consisting of Mr. Birmingham, Mr. Boyden, and Mr. Foster consult with the
Mayor again.
It was voted to give up the evening hours of opening at the Branch because of the very
small use made of the library during those hours.
Mr. Delaney reported that he would get estimates again for linoleum floor covering and
for fluorescent lights for the work room at the Main Library.
The report of the Librarian was read and placed on file.
