Beverly, February 27, 1947
A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held on Thursday, February 27, at 7:30,
with Mr. Delaney, and Messrs. Birmingham, Boyden, Foster, and Small in attendance. The records of the meeting of January 30 were read and approved.
The Finance Committee reported that expenditures for January and February had been
normal, but that since the budget for 1947 had not yet been passed no formal statements of
expenditures and balances could be given.
The Administration Committee, also, had nothing to report.
The Committee on Circulation recommended the purchase of 401 books - mainly juveniles
- and the acceptance of 2 gifts. Voted: that this recommendation be approved.
A letter was received from Mr. Thomas J. Toomey, Secretary of the Farms Residents
Committee, saying that the Rev. Leon Miles have been appointed Chairman of the group, and that
two more members, Mrs. Chisholm and Mr. William Kapp, had been added to the Committee.
The letter contained several suggestions about Story Hours for the Children, in the
afternoons, and Book Reviews for the Adults in the evenings, and inquiring what would be the
policy of the Trustees with regard to allowing the hall to be used by outside groups, whether for
the benefit of the Children or for church or social affairs.
In answer to the inquiry, the Trustees voted that the hall could be used by responsible
groups of citizens for other than library purposes at a charge of five dollars for each occasion,
plus a charge of $1.50 an hour for the janitor, outside of library hours.
Every request for such use of the hall must be made to the Administration Committee of
the Trustees, which shall have the power to waive the five dollar charge in the case of affairs for
community or educational purposes, or for the benefit of children.
Miss Stanton was authorized to inform the Committee of this vote.
The report of the Librarian, giving figures of circulation and registration for the month
was read and placed on file.
Miss Stanton brought up the question of allowing members of the Staff to arrange their
hours so as to work five days a week instead of six, it they so desired.
This was left open for discussion at the next meeting, after further consideration by Miss
Stanton and Mr. Delaney.
Voted: to adjourn
