Beverly, November 29, 1946
The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library on Friday,
November 29, at 7:30 P.M. with Mr. Delaney, Mrs. Conrad, and Messrs. Birmingham, Foster,
and Rowe in attendance.
The records of the regular meeting of October 31 and of the special meeting held at the
Farms on November 15 were read and approved.
The Finance Committee presented for the consideration of the Board the budget which
had been preferred at the Committee meeting held on November 22.
This called for a larger appropriation for the item Pages & Substitutes, since it is no longer
possible to obtain part time workers at 25 and 35 cents an hour; but no increase was asked for
regular members of the Staff since it is understood that this matter will be taken care of by the
City Government.
Estimated cost of Maintenance was increased to meet rising costs of practically all times
on the budget.
The Board voted to approve this recommendation and to send to the City Government a
budget calling for $26,073.80 under the item Salary and $12,275.00 under the item Maintenance.
It was further voted that this be accompanied by a letter prepared by Mr. Small, explaining
why increases in salary had not been asked for and why additional appropriations for Maintenance
were so necessary.
It was voted to put Mrs. Deborah McGann on as Farms Librarian at a beginning salary of
$1260.00 and to request the Mayor to appropriate sufficient money to make the position of
janitor at the Farms Branch a full-time instead of a part-time job.
Voted: to then make the hours of opening at the Branch 2 P.M. to 8 P.M. - Wednesdays
through Fridays; and 10 A.M. to 6 P.M. on Saturdays.
The Committee on Circulation recommended the purchase of 87 new titles and the
acceptance of 21 gifts. This recommendation was approved.
It was voted to ask Mr. Matthew Bartlett, Mrs. Howard Doane and Messrs. Arthur
Dupee, Thomas Toomey and John Trowt to serve for the year 1947 as members of a Committee
of Farms residents to consult with the Branch Committee of the Trustees on matters pertaining to
the Branch Library. Mrs. Conrad, as Chairman of the Library Branch Committee, will serve as
Chairman of this joint committee.
Voted: to accept with regret the resignation of Mrs. Edna Hurlburt who has been a
member of the Staff for over twenty years and who is retiring on December 3 1st.
It was left with Mr. Delaney and Miss Stanton to make necessary adjustments and fill
vacancies on the Staff.
Because of the Holidays, the December meeting will be omitted.
