Beverly, October 31, 1946
The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library on Thursday
evening, October 31, with Mr. Delaney, Mrs. Conrad, and Messrs. Birmingham, Rowe, Foster,
and Small in attendance.
The records of the meeting of September 26 were read and approved, as was the report of
the Finance Committee giving details of expenditures to date.
Because of the resignation of three members of the Staff and the illness of a fourth
member, vacancies had been created which the Trustees had been unable to fill except by part
time substitutes.
This will leave an unexpended salary balance of a thousand dollars which the Trustees
voted to request the City Government to transfer to the Library Maintenance account.
(Books 100.00; Replacements 200.00; Binding 200.00; Fuel 300.00; Janitor's Supplies
50.00; Express 50.00; Office Supplies 700.00).
Mr. Delaney the presented Mr. Boyden's report of the probably cost of repairs to the
Farms Branch.
The approximate amount needed would be $17,000: - $12,000 for the outside; $3,000 for
the inside, including plastering, painting, a new floor with asphalt covering, etc.; and the balance
to cover architect' s fees and increased cost of materials.
After discussion it was voted that a Committee, consisting of Mr. Boyden, Mr.
Birmingham, and Mr. Foster meet with the Mayor to explain the situation, and that a formal
request be sent to the City Government for a special appropriation of $17,000 to cover these
long-needed repairs and changes.
Voted also that a special meeting of the Board of Trustees be held at the Farms Branch on
Friday, November 15 - to which the public should be invited - to see if greater use of the Library
could be promoted.
The Circulation Committee recommended the purchase of 495 books, mainly for Children
and High School use. This was approved.
It was voted that the same list of newspapers be taken in 1947 as that subscribed to this
year, and that the order for the papers be placed with the Nathan Foster store, as in former years.
The Report of the librarian was read and accepted.
A letter was received from Mrs. Edna Hurlburt, who had been on the Staff for over twenty
years, asking that her resignation take effect on December thirty-first; but since this required no
action at this time, her letter was placed on file until the November meeting.
Voted: to adjourn
