Loring, Marion Glidden, Mrs. E. Prebble Motley, Sr., and Moses I. Simon, and Robert O. Small Board members absent: Thomas J. Casey, Thomas F. Delaney, and William A. Rowe Others present: Recorder: Marjorie H. Stanton December 28, 1939 The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library on Thursday, December 28th, at 4 P.M. There were present, of the Trustees, Miss Loring, Mrs. Motley, Mrs. Glidden, Messrs. Small and Simon. The records of the meeting of November 28th were read and approved. Mr. Small, as Chairman of the Finance Committee, presented for discussion the budget for 1940, as it had been prepared by that Committee, explaining each item in detail. It was moved, seconded and voted that this budget, asking for $33,942.80 and one half the dog tax, be adopted as presented and that the Finance Committee be authorized to forward it to the Mayor and the Board of Aldermen at the proper time. Voted: that Miss Stanton find out what increases had been granted in the City since 1930, when the last increases were given to members of the Library Staff. Mr. Simon reported that he had inquired into the prices of a water cooler for the Farms Branch, and found that they ranged from $109 to $185, according to size and kind. Voted: that this matter be left until a later meeting of the Board. Letters were received from Mrs. C. S. Pond, thanking the Trustees for the beautiful flowers sent as a tribute to Mr. Pond; and from Norman Blotner, requesting that the book "Incredible Era" be added to the Library. The following testimonial to Mr. Pond, who had served as Trustee for nearly eighteen years was read and approved; and it was voted that a copy be sent Mrs. Pond. Voted to adjourn Adjourned Marjorie H. Stanton Secretary Testimonial to Rev. Clarence Strong Pond Rev. Clarence Strong Pond of Puritan decent died in Beverly Farms, December 12, 1939. He was born in Boston in 1879, was graduated from the Boston University in 1901 and took a degree at the Harvard Divinity School in 1908. He was appointed minister at the Baptist Church of Beverly Farms in 1904, where he became the devoted and beloved friend and adviser of every one whether in or out of his parish. In 1924 he was made a teacher in the Beverly high School, where he achieved great success. In 1922 he was appointed a member of the Board of Trustees of the Beverly Public Library and served in than capacity with great credit and ever increasing interest. He was punctual in attendance and always added to the discussions a word of encouragement and advice. He was very popular with the staff in whom he was much interested. Whereas his fellow trustees deeply regret the loss of their friend BE IT VOTED that this memoir be spread upon the records and a copy sent to Mrs. Pond.
