Loring, Thomas J. Casey, Thomas F. Delaney, Mrs. E. Prebble Motley, Sr., Moses I. Simon, and Mr. Trowt Board members absent: Rev. Clarence S. Pond, William A. Rowe, and Robert O. Small, Others present: Recorder: Marjorie H. Stanton Beverly, February 23, 1939 The regular meeting of the Board was held at the Library at 4 P.M. on Thursday February 23, there being present of the Trustees, Miss Loring, Mrs. Motley, Messrs. Trowt, Simon, Delaney and Casey. The records of the meeting of January 28th were read and approved after which the Board moved to organization for the year. By ballot, Miss Loring was again elected Chairman, and Miss Stanton, Secretary. The Chairman then appointed the following committees for 1939: FINANCE COMMITTEE Mr. Small, Chairman Mr. Delaney Mr. Rowe Mr. Casey Miss Loring CIRCULATION COMMITTEE Mrs. Motley, Chairman Miss Loring Mr. Pond ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE Mr. Delaney, Chairman Mr. Trowt Mr. Casey BRANCH COMMITTEE Mr. Trowt, Chairman Mr. Pond Mrs. Motley PUBLICITY Mr. Simon, Chairman Since the City Government had cut from the budget all salary increases asked for, for members of the Staff, the Board discussed the advisability of sending to the Mayor a letter protesting against the refusal to grant increases at least to the four lowest-paid assistants on the Staff. - this protest to be based on the grounds that though other employees of the City had had increases during the last few years, it had been eight years since the Trustees had been able to allow the step increases which they had voted for the Library Assistants. The Board approved this letter of protest, as drawn up by Miss Loring, but voted to leave until the April meeting the question of deciding when it should be sent to the Mayor. The Committee on Circulation recommended the purchase of 98 new titles. Voted: that this recommendation be approved. There were no gifts. Voted: that the Secretary send to Mr. Pond a note of the sympathy of the Board for him in his illness, and expressing the hope that he would soon be improved in health.
