I am pleased to inform you that the City of Beverly, through our Fire Department, has received
two grants for Student Awareness of Fire Education from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
in the amounts of $5,407 (S.A.F.E.) and $2,813 (Senior S.A.F.E.). With your approval, these
S.A.F.E. grants will be used to support critical public fire and life safety initiatives.
Massachusetts General Law Chapter 44 Section 53Arequires both council and mayoral approval
before any grant or gifts to the city can be expended for their prescribed purpose. I therefore
request the council approve this grant by taking action on this matter at your upcoming meeting
of the City Council on Monday, February 5, 2018. Thank you.

Dear Honorable Council:
I am pleased to inform you that the City of Beverly, through our Police Department, has been
awarded a $90,000 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health to support the
hiring of a co- response clinician who will assist police staff on calls for individuals who need
mental health and /or substance use supports. The MA Jail Arrest Diversion Grant is a
collaborative effort between the Beverly, Essex, Gloucester, Ipswich, Manchester and Rockport
Police Departments.
With your approval, this grant will be used for the hiring of a co- response clinician from Lahey
Behavioral Health to support the various police departments assist individuals with mental health
and /or substance use issues so they avoid incarceration or emergency room visits and receive
appropriate treatment and support. Massachusetts General Law Chapter 44 Section 53A requires
both council and mayoral approval before any grant or gifts to the city can be expended for their
prescribed purpose. I therefore request the council approve this grant by taking action on this
matter at your upcoming meeting of the Beverly City Council on February 5, 2018. Thank you.
