Cahill, President Beverly City Council City Hall, 191 Cabot Street Beverly, MA 01915 April 22, 2010 Dear President Cahill and Members of the Council, At the April 7, 2010 meeting of the Open Space & Recreation Committee, Sue Gabriel, Executive Director of Beverly Bootstraps and members of the Bootstraps Community Gardens appeared before the Committee to discuss their hopes to expand the existing gardens located on Cole Street (Assessor's Map 45 Lot 49). The Committee would like to express its full support and is happy to help promote this proposal in any way it can. Ms. Gabriel explained the many benefits that these gardens bring to both Beverly community members who manage and maintain the plots and to those who use the Bootstraps food pantry program. All participating gardeners donate some portion of their plots' yield to the food pantry as well as help maintain plots specifically set aside for Bootstraps' use. Further, the gardeners assist in running the Bootstraps Farmer's Market booth at Beverly Homecoming. The Cole Street site is kept in good condition. Gardeners are respectful of the neighbors and occasional gardening classes are offered to the public; I have personally attended a very informative on-site class about amending soil and organic gardening taught by community gardener Carmen Kruczynski. Hedges, bushes and some flowers are maintained along the front edge portions of the garden. Any grassy areas are kept mown, and raised planting beds are weeded. Compost is kept in an inconspicuous location at the back of the lot. When asked about the possibility of building plots with elevated growing tables to accommodate handicapped persons, the Bootstraps representatives seemed open to the idea. The Committee is confident that having more plots available for Beverly residents, who enjoy gardening but don't have the space, would result in a win-win situation. A currently under-utilized City property would experience full potential in offering a truly community shared asset. The waiting list, which is currently quite extensive, for plot assignment would shrink and more people would become involved in and enhance the mission of Bootstraps, which is a vital community organization providing critical assistance to local families in need. The Committee trusts that the Council recognizes the many benefits of community gardening. Beverly is lucky to be able to provide space such as the Cole Street garden site and we hope that you will support and bless the Bootstrap's request for expansion.
