An Organizational Meeting of the Beverly School Committee was held on Monday, January 7, 2008 in
Room 164 at the Memorial Building, Beverly, MA.
Members Present:
Mr. Manzi, Mr. Manzo, Ms. Decker, Ms. Cesa, Mr. Latter, Mayor Scanlon and
Ms. Fogarty.
Also in Attendance:
Dr. James Hayes, Superintendent of Schools
Donna Bergeron, Executive Secretary to the Superintendent and School
Committee
Dr. Hayes called the meeting to order at 6:10p.m.
Ms. Fogarty led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Dr. Hayes stated the reason for the meeting:
In accordance with Section B, School Committee Governance and Operations, of the
Policy Manual, "An Organizational Meeting shall be held the first Monday in January at
which time the officers of the School Committee shall be elected. "
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Office of President
Superintendent Hayes declared nominations open for the Office of President.
Mr. Latter nominated Ms. Cesa. There were no further nominations.
A roll call vote on the nominations resulted in the following:
For Ms. Cesa: Ms. Decker, Mr. Manzo, Mr. Manzi, Mayor Scanlon, Mr. Latter, Ms. Fogarty, and
Ms. Cesa.
The vote being unanimous, Ms. Cesa was elected President.
Superintendent Hayes turned the meeting over to the newly elected President.
Office of Vice President
Ms. Cesa declared nominations open for the Office of Vice President. Ms. Fogarty nominated
Ms. Decker. There were no further nominations.
A roll call vote on the nominations resulted in the following:
For Ms. Decker: Ms. Cesa, Ms. Decker, Mr. Manzo, Mr. Manzi, Mayor Scanlon, Mr. Latter and
Ms. Fogarty.
The vote being unanimous, Ms. Decker was elected Vice-President.
Office of Secretary
Ms. Cesa declared nominations open for the Office of Secretary. Mr. Manzi nominated Mr.
Manzo. There were no further nominations.
A roll call vote on the nominations resulted in the following:
For Mr. Manzo: Ms. Fogarty, Ms. Cesa, Ms. Decker, Mr. Manzo, Mr. Manzi, Mayor Scanlon
and Mr. Latter.
The vote being unanimous, Mr. Manzo was elected Secretary.
Appointment of Subcommittee Members and Chairperson(s)
Ms. Cesa announced the members appointed to the following committees:
A. Standing Committee on Finance and Facilities - Mr. Manzo, Chair, Mr. Latter and Ms.
Cesa
B. Standing Committee on Curriculum, Instruction and Student Life - Ms. Decker, Chair,
Ms. Fogarty and Mr. Manzo
C. Negotiations Committee - Mr. Latter, Chair, Ms. Cesa and Mr. Manzi
D. Policy Review Committee - Mr. Manzi, Chair, Ms. Fogarty and Ms. Decker
Ms. Cesa said she will be reviewing the applicants for the Citizen Advisor positions and will
announce the names at the January 16th School Committee meeting.
Ms. Cesa thanked her fellow committee members saying she "felt honored" and is looking
forward to working together. Ms. Cesa said that there are numerous challenges ahead and as
well as achievements too.
Ms. Cesa said that at the School Committee Retreat on Saturday she would like the Committee
members to think about developing School Committee goals and asked that everyone bring at
least two ideas/goals with them to be discussed. Ms. Cesa talked about reviewing the document
used to evaluate the Superintendent, seating at School Committee meetings possibly changing
and community outreach.
Dr. Hayes said that Mr. Mike Gilbert, MASC Representative will be at the retreat on Saturday to
review the roles and responsibilities of School Committee members.
A motion to adjourn was made by Mr. Latter and seconded by Mr. Manzo. So voted.
Meeting adjourned at 6:25 p.m.
