Board members absent: Patti Adams, Arthur Powell, Gary Lambert
Others present: Director Bruce Doig, Tom Scully
Election of officers: Mark Casey was nominated for the position of chairman. Nominations for
chairman were closed and all voted in favor of Mark for Chairman. Lauren Young was nominated for
the position of vice chairman. Nominations for vice chairman were closed and all voted in favor.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT

North Pole – about 80 children were called over the course of 4 nights.

Middle School Strength Conditioning Program starts on Monday, January 10. Expecting a
“strong” turn out.

Field Committee’s next meeting is January 18

Lynch Park Advisory Committee: upcoming events include the return of “Good Heaven’s, Mrs.

Evans” April 1 & 2, David S. Lynch Park Appreciation Day on July 17 and Art by the Sea on

September 25 & 26. Their next meeting is January 20

Touch A Truck date has been changed to Saturday, May 21 as requested by Mike Collins.

Vitale Site- met with Mayor Scanlon, Tina Cassidy and Roy Gelineau to discuss Vitale site plans.
Mayor will meet with NEPCO to get written confirmation on agreement. The tenative agreement
includes a parking lot, concession stand with electric, water and sewer, irrigation, playing fields
and foundation for lights.

Lynch Park – seawall has several large holes along the Woodbury Beach side. This has been
reported to Mike Collins.

Veteran Memorials at Odell Park: Tom reported that at a recent meeting with Mayor he explained
that the Recreation Commission is still waiting for a written detailed plan from the Veterans for
that park. Mayor Scanlon told Tom that he has not spoken to Mr. Petronzio in several years. The
survey was discussed. Lauren suggested and it was agreed that the survey be eliminated.

Beverly Golf & Tennis: “Save the Pool” group is going to the next meeting to present their plan.
To date no money has been raised. According to the newspaper the suit with Johnson has been
settled.

Beverly Youth Collaboration: new budget has been approved. Still looking for funds to make
repairs at the McPherson Youth Center.

Holcroft Park: this year Community Development can only fund two parks (usually Balch and
Ahearn) although it is up to us. Beverly Affordable Housing may come up with some funding for
Holcroft.

Playgroup Equipment: New equipment has arrived for Gillis Park. It will be assembled in the barn
and installed in the spring. Still working on moving the equipment from Edwards School to Dane
Street. Measurements have been taken at Dane to see how everything will fit. DPW cannot start
the work until the spring.

New Bench: someone is interested in buying a bench for Innocenti Park.
??
Skating: received a request for the installation of a skating rink at Lynch Park.

Advertising: discussed having other businesses advertise in our brochures. Bruce will talk to the
City Solicitor regarding the legalities.

City Budget: discussed a recent article in the newspaper stating that according to the report
submitted to the City Council by Kathy Griffin the Parks & Recreation Department spending per

capita is ranked 4 highest in the area with a budget of $1,006,047 (FY03). Since our budget is
$208,000 she has obviously included some DPW money and possibly the Enterprise money. Bruce
will get a copy of the report to check the breakdown.

Dog Park Committee: the group will present their plan for Bessie to the Recreation Commission at
the next meeting. If plan is approved a public hearing will be arranged.

Lynch Park: Discussed raising the prices for use of the Rose Garden in anticipation of the higher
prices that will be charged once the Carriage House is available. Also discussed establishing a
“garden maintenance fund” and contracting out the chair rentals.
