Update from DEIB Director—Wangari o Now tenured 1year- • Has spent time connecting with community to validate/understand the results from the audit o Has held workshops internally (run by HRNA for department heads) • Workshop#1-focused on definitions and having common language • Workshop#2 - Focus on empowerment for speaking up/out ■ Next steps: department heads to curate their own needs/action plan based on what they've learned/understood from the HRNA workshops o ADA work-continue advancing how people are reporting/investingffollowing through with grievances as well as preparing for increasingly diversified community (language access plan, collaborating with city-connect, etc.) o Insights so far: • Need to be more connected/no more silos • Need to be more aware of,who actually is in Beverly • Ideas include more community events/engagement and custom-made for people who need more inclusion 2. Recruitment and planning o Best practice for DEI is to create purpose-driven statements about who are we,what are our goals--hack then into what kinds of skill sets, voices that we need- matrix into how to recruit o Consequence of affirmative action fallout is that we cannot recruit based on identity characteristics (potential liable issue) instead need to be looking for situation/lived experiences/skill sets- o Deep discussion regarding the recruitment process- use guidelines to scope a suggested process to meet with Mayor/Solicitor etc. about to cast a wider net for potential committee members o Inquiry regarding incidence response protocol (BPD should lead) o I o Invite city council in to discuss expectations/ordinance, how to expand awareness of HRC and open seats o Establishing HRC as a point org to connect community for concerns/needs/etc. .
