A regular meeting of the Beverly School Committee was held on Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at
the City Council Chambers, Beverly City Hall, Beverly, MA.
Members Present: Ms. Bell, Ms. Brusil, Ms. Cronin, Ms. Norris, Mr.Tallo
and Ms. Coburn.
Members Absent: Mayor Crean
Administrators in Attendance: William Lupini, Superintendent of Schools,
James Hayes, Assistant Superintendent, and
Hans Baumhauer, Director of Operations.
President Coburn called the meeting to order at 7:04 PM.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ms. Cronin.
RECOGNITION
Dr. Lupini, President Coburn, and Jo Lennox, Beverly Rotary Club, recognized and honored
Rotary Teacher of the Year for 2001-2002.

Destination Imagination Team
members who recently placed first in State Competition,
qualifying them to compete in the Global Finals at the University of Tennessee at
Knoxville on May 22-26, 2002, were recognized for their achievements. Participants are:
Kate Reed, Stephanie Harris, Anna Roy, Anna Reed, Lauren McInnis, Clare Stanton and
Lindsey McLaughlin (Cove School); Bill Raymond, Mike Andruszkiewicz, Andrew
Walker, Kyle Theriault (Beverly High School), along with former BPS students, Casey
Thomas, Jennifer Ames and Sarah Diehl. Special thanks was paid to elementary school
coaches, Lisa Reed and Karen Stanton, and BHS coach, Doug Walker.
Middle School Technology Fund Committee
members were recognized for all of their
work toward providing additional access to technology at Briscoe and Memorial Middle
Schools. Members included: Alice Williams, Elaine Crowley, Eileen Boches, Karen
Wynoski, Judith Cronin and Bruce Dyas. Additional thanks was paid to Technology
Director, Judy Miller.
Department of Education's Regional Student Advisory Committee
Beverly High School students, Jonah Kaitz and Allison Kenney, were recognized on
being elected by their peers to the Regional Student Advisory Committee.
Leon Lemeiux,
was applauded and recognized for his contribution of $4200.00 to the
School Department to be used in purchasing computers for kindergarten classes
throughout the district.
Beverly High School World Language Teacher, Douglas Guy,
was recognized for
recently having a revised edition of his German textbook, "Vorsprung", published by
Houghton Mifflin.
The Committee recessed at 7:25 PM.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT
Liz Mueller noted the following activities at Beverly High School the past month:

Encouraged students to register to vote (during lunch periods) and/or to use a mail-in
form
·
Continued recycling efforts at BHS
·
Fund-raising efforts produced $405 for Solar Now program
·
Sponsored assemblies to hear gubernatorial candidate and representative from Peace
Corp
·
Student representation at Dartmouth Leadership Conference
COMMUNICATIONS
Dr. Lupini noted an editorial in the paper regarding Beverly's favorable standings in the

statewide MCAS testing program. MCAS testing begins May 14.

meeting held April 10, 2002, as presented. So voted.

on the budget held May 2, 2002, as presented. So voted.
SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
School Choice
·
It was moved by Ms. Bell and seconded to approve the recommendation of the
Administration to participate in the School Choice program for grades one through
five and grades seven through twelve for the 2002-2003 school year and adopt the
following number of slots as being available:
Grade One 4 students
Grade Two 3 students
Grade Three 11 students
Grade Four 5 students
Grade Five 4 students
Grade Seven 7 students at each middle school
Grade Eight 5 students at each middle school
Grade Nine 7 students
Grade Ten 10 students
Grade Eleven 12 students
Grade Twelve 15 students
So voted.
FY03 School Department Budget

Upon the recommendation of the Administration and the Standing Committee on
Finance and Facilities, it was moved by Ms. Cronin and seconded to approve a total
school department budget of $38,711,389 for FY2003 and, therefore, to request an
appropriation from the city of $37,631,015 to fund the school department budget for
FY2003.
A roll call vote resulted in the following:
YES: Ms. Cronin, Ms. Norris, Mr. Tallo, Ms. Bell, Ms. Brusil and Ms. Coburn.

COMMITTEE REPORTS AND UPDATE ON SCHOOL COMMITTEE GOALS
Secondary Facilities
Mr. Tallo reported on a meeting held recently with a representative from NESDEC and
school administrators to discuss the High School physical plant. The committee will
work with Mayor Crean to consider a budget for capital improvement projects.
The next meeting will be held Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at 7:00 PM in the School
Committee Room, Briscoe Middle School.
School Committee Goal I - Develop Plan to Improve Beverly High School Facility
No further report.
Standing Committee on Curriculum, Instruction and Student Life
Ms. Norris reported on the meeting held May 6, 2002. Discussion focused on handbooks,
dual enrollment, summer enrichment, and athletic eligibility.
The next meeting will be held Monday, June 3, 2002, at 7:00 PM in the School Committee
Room, Briscoe Middle School.
School Committee Goal II - Promote Beverly High School
No further report.
Standing Committee on Finance and Facilities
Ms. Cronin reported on meetings held April 24, 2002. Ms. Cronin praised the
Administration for the extensive and thorough manner in which the FY03 budget was
presented. She also thanked citizen advisors, Wendy Taylor and Ann Marie Cesa, for
their participation on the committee. The next meeting will be held May 20, 2002.
School Committee Goal V - Update District Policy Manual
Ms. Cronin will meet with Dr. Lupini to continue the update and review of policies.
Subcommittee on Negotiations
No report at this time.
School Committee Goal IV - Review Process and Documentation for Superintendent's
Evaluation
Mrs. Bell reported revision and review of the Superintendent Evaluation document is
continuing.
School Committee Goal III - Develop a Strategic Plan for the Beverly Public Schools
No report at this time.
