January 5, 1998
A special meeting of the Beverly School Committee was held on Monday,
January 5, 1998 in the School Committee Room, Briscoe Middle School,
Beverly, MA for the purpose of organizing the 1998 School Committee.
Members Present: Mr. Bjork, Mrs. Brusil, Mr. Cahill, Mrs. Frutiger,
Mr. McHugh, Mayor ScanIon and Mrs. Goodenough.
Members Absent: None
Also in Attendance: William Lupini, Superintendent of Schools,
Keith Manville, Assistant Superintendent, and
Judy Mulligan, School Business Manager.
Superintendent Bill Lupini called the meeting to order at 6:33 PM.
A moment of silence was observed in memory of Gall Murray, Memorial Middle
School teacher, who died on December 23, 1997.
Election of Officers For 1998
Superintendent Lupini declared nominations open for the office of President.
Mrs. Brusil nominated Bill Cahill. Nomination seconded.
Mr. Bjork nominated Linda Goodenough. Nomination seconded.
· It was moved by Mr. McHugh and seconded to declare nominations closed.
So voted.
A roll call vote was requested, which resulted in the following:
For Mr. Cahill: Mrs. Brusil, Mr. Cahill, Mrs. Frutiger
For Mrs. Goodenough: Mr. Bjork, Mrs. Goodenough, Mr. McH ugh, Mayor Scan Ion
The vote being 4 for Mrs. Goodenough and 3 for Mr. Cahill, Mrs. Goodneough
was declared President.
Superintendent Lupini passed the gavel to the newly elected president.

Mrs. Goodenough declared nominations open for the office of
Vice-President.
Mr. Bjork nominated Bob McHugh. Nomination seconded.
Mrs. Frutiger nominated Bill Cahill. Nomination seconded.
Mayor ScanIon made brief comments.
Mr. McHugh withdrew his name from nomination.
There being no further nominations, nominations were declared closed
A roll call vote was requested which resulted in the following:
For Mr. Cahilh Mr. Bjork, Mrs. Brusil, Mr. Cahill, Mrs. Frutiger,
Mr. McHugh, Mayor ScanIon and Mrs. Goodenough.
Unanimously voted.
Mr. Cahill was declared Vice President.
Mrs. Goodenough declared nominations open for the office of Secretary.
Mr. McHugh nominated Liz Frutiger. Nomination seconded.
There being no further nominations, nominations were declared closed.
A roll call vote was requested, which resulted in the following:
For Mrs. Frutiger:Mrs. Brusil, Mr. Cahill, Mrs. Frutiger, Mr. McHugh
Mayor ScanIon, Mr. Bjork and Mrs. Frutiger.
Unanimously voted.
Mrs. Frutiger was declared elected Secretary.
1998 Meetings Schedule
Superintendent Lupini presented a meetings schedule for 1998 for consideration.
It was noted that the calendar is not all-inclusive and meetings for finance and
negotiations will be scheduled on an as-needed basis.
· It was moved by Mr. Cahill and seconded to approve the calendar of 1998
meetings, as presented. Unanimously voted.

School Committee Legal Counsel
Superintendent Lupini recommended that Naomi Stonberg, 57 River Street,
Wellesley, MA be retained as legal counsel to the School Committee and
Administration, effective immediately, terms and conditions of this agreement to
be negotiated prior to the January 12 school committee meeting.
It was further recommended by the Superintendent that Thomas Nuttall of the
law firm Kenney, Conley, Sullivan, and Smith continue to be retained for special
education representation.
· It was moved by Mr. Cahill and seconded to approve the recommendations of the
Superintendent for retention of legal counsel, as presented. Unanimously voted.
The meeting adjourned at 6:50 PM.
