Board members present: Bruce Doig, Elizabeth Caputo, Albert W. Churchill, Jr,, Kevin Hobin, and
Jane Lyman
Board members absent: Donald Anastasi, David Gardner, Ann Harney, and Ivy Mahan
Others present: Joan Fairbank, Recreation Director, Mari Matt, Tom Scully and Mr. John Feenan.
Mr. Feenan spoke about the new memorial at the park for David Lynch. He has been very active, along
with Alice Burns and Tom Scully in getting the memorial under way and raising the necessary funds.
Many donations have been received and the Lynch Trustess will also contribute. The project, a recreation
of the original fountain near the garden, is well underway and should be completed within a month. Area
will include 3 granite benches. A dedication ceremony is being considered.
Minutes of previous meeting were accepted as written.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
· Discussed Assistant Director position and current salary which is considerably lower than what is being
paid for a similar position in neighboring towns. Motion was made that Bruce, Kevin and AI make a
presentation to the Mayor regarding the issue of Mari's salary. Motion carried.
· Discussed field needs for the various leagues. Soccer needs two long fields, Little League needs
practice fields.Joan would like Girls Softball to stop using the 3V Field at the High School if we could
find another field for them. Discussed possibilities at Norwoods Pond, North Beverly School, and the
dump after capped. Dump must be done by November 19, 1999 or City will face heavy fines.
Consultants do not believe the area will be safe for playing fields due to the gases that will be venting
from the site.
Tom suggested a meeting with the following people: the City engineer Frank Killilea, David Lang from
the Conservation Commission and Phil Klimowicz for DPW. It was also suggested to get the plans for
the North Beverly and Centerville schools.
· Electric Insurance of Beverly wants to donate a scoreboard for Vittori Park. They would like their
name on the board, as well as, design input. The Commission was asked to consider this offer.
Chairman Doig will get in touch with them and get more details.
· Joan talked to Tom Bussone regarding new construction at Harry Ball Field. She was told they built a
platform for viewing, and on one building the stairs were moved from inside the building to outside
the building to create storage space to replace space being lost at Walgreens.
· Ann Hamey has told Joan that she needs to resign from the Commission. She will put her resignation
in writing.
December 10 was selected for the Annual Commission Dinner at the Depot.
