1998-10RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT
OCTOBER 1998
MONTH HIGHLIGHTS
Colgate playground equipment installed by neighborhood. Organized by Gary Morals of 10 Wellesley
Rd. end spearheaded by Carol Valliere of 10 Radcliff Rd At least 25 -30 of the neighbors were
revolved in the effort
The park/playground visits by the consultants end myself were all done on the weekend of September
26 & 27 end we are now well on oar way to the next step of the project. Maintenance costs and who
will do it must be addressed as the plan develops. Received a request to staff Colgate next year
Received inquiries about the Vittori playground equipment
3. Wrote to Bill Lupini regarding the schools and playground eqmpment. Whatever they do will affect
the amount, locations and kind of equipment that we will purchase.
4. Goric playground has installed the slide rails here at Lynch Park and will be replacing the worn tires
and the new slide at Bessie Baker.
Received a complaint fxom Red Hutt that a baseball team that we gave a permit to for Sunday
mornings should not be playing there because the soccer goals had to be put back each week at a $50
expense to his oftleo. The problem was solved once we knew that soccer was not using the field for
the next 4 weeks. We also had permission for the Endicott AD, Larry Heizer, to use their varsity
baseball field for 2 of the dates. The league decided to stay at Bulch as it was near the original
location and could be consisteat for the season.
The fall flyer has been mailed and registration is coming in at a steady pace. The hot classes are
Windows, Word, Cardio Kick-Boxing and Watercolors as well as craft programs. We have all been
working hard at developing 1 page ~yers for posting and mailing and promoting the program through
every means possible.
7. Media One did a program this week on the enrichment programs. 24 New Programs for this session.
8. All four of our computers are being networked today and information will be able to be shared. We
will be able to print at any of the printers and communications should be easier. We also parchased a
scanner that will be useful for our brochures, ~yers and web page. Two of the computers are also
being upgraded to Windows 95. The RecTrac registration packages will also have a major upgrade
and we will all be able to enter registration.
9. Final Homecoming meeting was held and the committee is financially solveat to begin next year and
has 2 Homecoming chainnea for next year, Tim Flaherty and Al Timkin. It was the most proactive
and involved committee ever.
10. Work on the Dane Street Bathhouse is scheduled to begin on Monday Oct 5th under the direction of
the Building Inspector, Tim Brennan.
11. Met with Julie Sneath (921-0329) of the Mackerel Cove Association regarding the Dane St.
playground project. She said that the neighbors do not want a black chain link fence around the
equipment and she said that she was willing to investigate alternative fencing options. She knows
that the cost is a factor as well as being maintenance free, sturdy and have nor sharp edges or
protmsions. They would also like to landscape the area and agree to maintain it.
12. Shore Country Day School will be sending students once again for about 5-6 visits to do public
service projects. Any suggestions? We would like the swing sets sanded and painted, picnic benches
and 2 park benches put together, and the Safety Village stabilized and painted
During the last few years we have had a great deal of confusion over park names. When the Veterans
organization came out with names that did not consider if they had meaning to that particular park or if
they were names that would be easy to remember. I would like the Commission to decide which names
should be used in all park reports, programs and signs.
This should be done on an individual basis as some of the new names are
