GEORGE HELLER
RONALD RANTA, Esq.
LICENSE BOARD
CITY OF BEVERLY
MASSACHUSETTS
MINUTES - BEVERLY LICENSE BOARD - January 11, 2001
Meeting called to order at 6:30 p.m.
All members present.
Chaimtan Kelley introduced members of the Board.
1.) The Press Box - Attorney Altshuler present to represent The Press
Box. Also present were Baylus Baum and John Cormack.
The Board expressed their concern about a letter received from the Attorney
General's Office concerning the number of times The Press Box had been
named by DWI arrests as the last place to have been served. Do clients
have any infommtion?
Attorney Altshuler stated his clients are very serious about their business.
All employees are trained in alcohol safety. All are TIPS certified. There
are notices in the bar and pool room that they will be happy to pay for cab
fare. No one consciously serves an intoxicated person. They try to use
preventative measures.
Mr. Kelley - We want to put them on notice that there are four instances.
Did they happen outside Beverly? Lt. Roccio - They were in two years
ago. Had two violations. Discussion followed.
Minutes - January 11, 2001 Page 2
Mr. Kelley - It is four people. Gets less probable that people pick a name
out of a hat. Some of the time it must have substance.
Mr. Altshuler- These people are doing what they can to stop this type of
problem. Ask the Board to think carefully. Many people picked up are
going to say where they usually drink. Apologize for not have more fncts.
Mr. Ranta- This is difficult. My function is not as a defense attorney. It is
to protect the citizens of Beverly. This is my first letter in 1-2 years. Four
violations. Just want your clients to know they will be under a microscope
before this Board. It is unclear whether there may be some action.
Probable cause of an alarming nature that their name comes up four times in
six months. Cause for great concern especially since there were no other
notices. Impress on your clients it is alarming to me and the members of
the Board. They should be on notice that they are under a microscope.
Mr. Kelley - The DWI's are saying The Press Box. Is there any reason to
lie and misrepresent themselves?
Mr. Ranta - We clearly need to get more information. At this point with the
information we have, it gives us cause for concern. We are not in a position
to make a determination or give a suspension this evening. Thank you for
coming in.
2. Discussion concerning closing hours was held.
Next meeting scheduled for February 6, 2001 at 6:30 p.m. Meeting
adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Giallongo,
Clerk
