John Young presided.
Diane Costa made the motion, seconded by Edward Brindle, to accept the minutes of November
28, 2000 as read. Motion passed.
Public Presentation
None
Committee Reports
Personnel: Lindsay Diehl reported that the personnel committee will meet January 31, 2001 to
begin to redesign the library director’s evaluation form. Tom Scully reported that Director and
Assistant Director’s management contracts will be up for renewal June 30, 2001.
Administration: No report.
Finance: Edward Brindle reported that the finance committee met on January 23, 2001for the
purpose of reviewing the current financial affairs and with a view to seeing if there were any
variations that need to be noted before the Director offers the FY2002 budget. There were no
major variations. The finance committee was happy with the state of the budget as presented.
Long Range Planning: No report.
Report of the Library Director
1) Reading Room Furniture: We have bought more comfortable chairs and art prints for the North
Reading Room using money donated by Mr. Rossi and the Friends of the Library. 2) Farms
Model: Farms model is on display at the Main Library for a few weeks. 3) Office Furniture:
Office furniture has been bought for the circulation office. 4) Filtering: Congress passed a
mandatory filtering law. Any library that receives federal funds must have some filtering. This is
being appealed. 5) Movie advertisement: Advertisement promoting Beverly, Peabody, Danvers,
and Salem libraries will be shown at Loewe’s Theater in Danvers during the month of January. 6)
NetLibrary: State has bought one year membership to electronic book company, NetLibrary.
Patrons will be able to view and download electronic books.
Communications
1) State Aid: The Library will receive $55,715.58 in state aid.
Unfinished Business
1) Farms Donations: John Young thanked trustees for contributing to the Farms Building Fund.
2) Farms Library: Another big fund-raiser, a black tie ball, is being planned. Building fund has
raised/received pledges for $920,000.00. One-on-one tours for City Councilors will begin soon.
New Business
1) Nancy Robinson Endowment Fund: The Trustees received a letter from the Friends of the
Library informing them of their wish to establish an endowment fund in memory of Nancy P.
Robinson. Lindsay Diehl made the motion, seconded by Diane Costa, to:
accept the establishment by the Friends of the Beverly Public Library of the Nancy
P. Memorial Fund. Motion passed.
This will be sent to the City Council for their approval.
2) Five Year Plan: Tom Scully reported that current five year plan will expire in FY2002. Long
Range Planning Committee will meet February 27, 2001 at 6:00 P.M.
The next regular meeting of the Board will be Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at 7:00 P.M. at the
Main Library. This will be preceded by a meeting of the Long Range Planning Committee at 6:00
P.M. on the same evening.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:00 P.M.
