1968-11-21 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: 11/21/1968 Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Louisa V. Conrad, Diane M. Isenberg, Robert W. Lovett, Mieth Maeser, Dr. Cornelius J. Murray, Albert J. Ricci, Barbara D. Risley, Carolyn F. Standley, and Thomas J. Toomey Board members absent: Others present: Recorder: Florence A. Luther November 21, 1968 4 P.M. The regular meeting was held at the Library on the above date. Present: Mrs. Conrad, presiding, Mr. Maeser, Mr. Tooracy, Miss Standley, Dr. Murray, Mrs. Eisenberg, Mrs. Risley, Mr. Lovett and Mr. Ricci. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.. Reports of Department Heads were read and placed on file. For Administration: Mr. Toomey reported that he had conferred with the Mayor, as well as the Auditor, concerning the transfer of $1,065.27 which had not been used because the city workers had furnished the labor. VOTED: That a letter be sent to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen requesting such monies be transferred to Maintenance. This money to be spent for furniture for the Children's Room. He reported that Mayor Vitale is very aware of crowded conditions and the needs of the Children's Department. Consideration is being given to a Federal grant. Consideration is being given to a Commission to study wall repair. Mrs. Conrad brought to the attention of the Board that land and parking problems of the future might mean the acquisition of more land. Mr. Maeser suggested that in the future statistics be presented in graph form. Final approval of the budget was voted. Added were the following: $800.00 for Telephone. Two telephones now needed. Answering reference questions and tracking down overdue books keep the one line tied up. $2,000.00 for Furniture. $500.00 for Audio-Visual materials. Recent visits to libraries and conferences have convinced us that we should do more in this area. At present over 1,000 records are in our collection. Film slides and film strips should be added. Additional position in Grade XI for Audio-Visual Librarian. Position requires a person well acquainted with library procedures, including cataloguing, classifying, material and public relations as well as a knowledge of audio-visual field. Miss Carleton has been attending seminars where films are viewed and evaluated and techniques studied. Voted To request $3,000.00 in other outlays to change the position of the main desk for central charging and to make better of available space VOTED: Mrs. Opal Honnold be appointed Head of Circulation as of December 30, 1968. Mrs. Honnold has her B.S. from Iowa State University, and eleven credits beyond in Library Science. She comes to Beverly from Decatur Public Library, where she was Head of Circulation for six years. VOTED: Mrs. Frances Penta, who has been working on an hourly basis, be appointed to Library Assistant, Grade 5. Mrs. Penta has her B.S. from Simmons and has expressed a desire to study further in the library field. Mrs. Risley brought to attention of Board that two ladies are interested in a Friends of the Library organization. Miss Standley spoke of the asset such a group had been in Manchester and elsewhere. Miss StandIcy expressed a desire to attend Eastern Regional Library System program on Public Library Services to Schools. Mr. Toomey will attend North Shore Library meeting in Salem on December 12. Mrs. Boyd Roberts has offered to trim birch trees on Library lawn with lights for Christmas. Meeting adjourned at 5:30 P.M. Florence A. Luther Clerk
