December 19, 1957 Thursday
The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was held at the Library Thurs. Dec. 19 at 7:30.
Mrs. Conrad presided. Present were Miss StandIcy, Mr. Toomey, Mr. Casey, Mr. Cagan and Mr.
Lancaster who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Mr. Boyden who resigned because of
moving from Beverly.
The records of the Nov. 21st meeting were read and approved. The report of the Finance
Committee giving a summary of expenditures for the year were studied and placed on file. Mr.
Toomey explained that because of Mrs. McManus' resigned and no replacement made as yet and due
to so much illness of pages there was $500 that could be transferred to Maintenance to be used for
the fire escape that is not at all safe and should be replaced. This was not included in the Emergency
$28,000. He had an estimate of $2435 which he felt was high. A letter was sent to the Aldermen
requesting this transfer.
Mr. Toomey explained in detail the progress of the work. Mr. Greenlaw had reported as the
emergency lighting and study of the electrical board. Also motors in skylights could be put in good
condition for around $90. Mr. Belanger has done an excellent piece of work as he Mr. Toomey has
inspected the job at least 3 times a week. He states that the brick work is bad in places and explained
in detail as to this work. Also he explained in detail as to the iron work: railings, balconies, etc. that
are in terrific condition. Further report: inside ladder going to roof will be improved. At the Farms
the oil burner had been installed and a time clock put in and louver windows in the Farms boiler room.
He also spoke of further improvements and will get figures from the plasterers and floor coverers.
He read his expenditures & balances to date.
The report of the Circulation Comnfittee was accepted as read as was that of the Librarian' s
report.
As to the request from the Aldermen to remain open on Sat. evenings until 8 P.M. the matter
has been taken under advisement and a special committee was appointed by Mrs. Conrad to make a
thorough study of the matter and a report would be sent to the Board of Aldermen. A letter was sent
to the Aldermen Dec. 19 stating the above. Appointed as Chairman was Miss StandIcy, Mr.
Lancaster, Mrs. Cook and Mr. Pierce.
Voted: to dose Christmas and New Year's Eve at 6 o'clock.
Meeting adjourned at 8:50 but reconvened to change the next regular meeting from Jan. 19
to Jan. 23.
